Both were initially installed by HD. Im hoping it was the missing gaskets. I'll know more tomorrow when I ride it after I put new fuel in it.
The bike sat for about 5-6 years after the 1st owner died.

I would rebuild the carb if it has been sitting for that long...that is what I did with my 2001 SG soon after I got it when I could not get rid of the decel farting. I just gave in and did a total rebuild and replaced the needle jet with the old Sporty one, along with the emulsion tube, and went up one size with both jets as a starting point that worked out great. I replaced the 2-in-1 pipes with 2-in-2 pipes and had to back down one size on the main jet and remove the washer on the needle jet. I recently put some SE Pro II pipes on it and I am having to go back up with the main jet and put the washer back...

I tried the sporty needle, but the taper was too great and it ran too rich in the mid range. I went back to stock needle and put in a washer. That made it just about right thru the whole range. Ymmv

I took her out for a short ride and it was much better. I think I need to raise the idle a little and it should be ok. I'm going to take it out Sunday for a 30-40 mile ride.

The washer trick is a #40 brass washer on the needle (Ace Hardware). The needle is accessed from the top cover of the carb. Try googling "Joe Minton , carb tuning" some good information in his tips. When using the enrichening **** make sure you oush it in when the ingine is warmed up. Full out when cold and as you are driving away go half and after a few minutes push all the way in. Cleaning the carb is a good bet. Use some Sea foam (Autozone). Good luck and enjoy the 02, nothing wrong with them

What I forgot to say is that it also pops when decelerating. I'm running 93 from she'll with about 5 oz of marvel mystery mixed with it to see if that helps.
It is still popping and spitting just not as bad.

Do you have the stock head pipes with the equalizer pipe by the clutch cable area? If so, check for holes in it. I got the decel popping and found that pipe had a hole in it. Fixed that and the decel popping was gone. They all pop a bit but usually you can't hear it. With a crack, or on some pipes/slip ons, you surely can.

Thumbs up

Fill her up with Shell Super Premium with Nitro & add a half a can of SEAFOAM . Wally world has it for about $6.00 !
Oh yeah , clean your fuel filter .

Carburetors are challenging because many different things can cause the same symptoms. When you go after the most likely cause and that doesn't seem to fix the problem, then it is time to either rebuild and start fresh or keep trying band-aid fixes. I prefer to rebuild. I find it is cheaper and faster and more through in the long run. You get to see and touch and clean and check everything and replace all the gaskets and diaphragms and start again with a known quality.

I had the same problem when I initially changed the needle jet. I kept digging and trying different jets until I discovered that the emulsion tube was a CV Performance part that does not work well with the HD needle. I replaced the emulsion tube with the HD part that goes with the needle jet which did a lot to improve idle and mid throttle performance.

One of the things I learned while fiddle-farting around with this CV 40 carb is that the float valve can get sticky which causes some intermittent fuel starvation which will cause popping and blow back when the mixture gets lean. An out of adjustment float will cause similar problems as well. I knocked mine just a little out of tolerance once which made it tricky to adjust idle mixture and the lean condition showed up in hard right turns. That was a booger to track down.

Also, if you have ever taken out the mixture adjust screw you might have lost the spring and washer, it could be that the o-ring in the mixture adjust screw packing kit may be deteriorated from being dry compromising your mixture settings, your accelerator pump diaphragm may be compromised and not getting a good spray when you accelerate...and it could be just gummed up from fuel sitting a long time and needing a good cleaning. Then it can be that the intake gaskets could be compromised from sitting so long without use and you have developed an intake leak...

I have a lot of patience with mechanical problems but there times that you just have to tear it all down and rebuild. That's is what I would do. If it were me, I would pull the carburetor, clean and rebuild it, and replace the intake gaskets at the same time and start again. If you have opened the exhaust some you may have to rejet as well.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I pulled the carb off today to replace the choke cable. While in there I pulled the vacuum lines and found a crack in the line where it connects to the Percocet.
Did a quick start and seems like that was the problem.
