i just got a 2002 FXDWG low mileage and love the bike. The problem is it is spitting, coughing and really cold running. It has screaming eagle dual pipes and an after market air filter Kuryakyn Pro-Series Hypercharger.
Any ideas?
Im sure they replaced that gasket. Check to make sure that the gasket has all the same holes as the carb/air cleaner backing plate. If not, that thing will ruin everything. That is a pretty common issue.
You might also try pulling on the enricher part way to see if it does better in the cough dept. if so, pull the slide and put the washer under the needle trick. They set them up lean and when you put on pipes and air cleaner , they are just too lean and will cough, especially when cold. I went with 1 size larger than stock idle jet and raised the needle one washer thickness and got rid of the coughing. I went up a main jet size when I put in the 95" kit. I now have 119k on it and it is crisp and pulls good through the range, without coughing, even in the very light throttle twist, where they tend to cough most often with stock jetting. Try a first gear wide open throttle, and if it didn't cough, try what I just said. If it is missing for some other reason it will most likely be something else, like plug wires etc. let us know
You can use a washer under the needle as a shim to lift or lower the needle and improve carb conditions. The only issues is that your needle doesn't come into effect at all throttle positions. Is it running well at idle? WOT? Half Throttle? Need more details.
It coughs at cruise and idles rough with cough and spitting.
I replaced the gaskets on the air cleaner last night after I found a leak. I should say I put gaskets on it since I didn't find any. I am running regular gas but plan on draining that and putting premium in there tomorrow.
