Call Howard at Motorcycle Metal and talk to him about your needs. He's a forum sponsor and will go through all the options he has to offer. I got my Ohlins from him several years ago and he set them up for my bike, type of riding I do, my weight, etc. I don't remember the cost but he did offer a discount to forum members and they were mid-range units, cost under $800. http://www.motorcyclemetal.com/
Went with Ohlins after talking with Howard. Went top range with mine and love them.
Howard will have several options that fit in your budget and you can get them longer than stock to pick up some extra travel. Very pleased with the comfort and the improved handling. I weigh 260 so I definitely maxed out the stock shocks. I no longer feel the small bumps and the spine crushing hit from the larger bumps has been reduced to barely noticable. Your passenger will notice the difference as well.

Like a couple of others here I also went with the top of the line ohlins shock. Before I bought my street bob this year my past was similar to yours. The past 8 years have been spent on the race track for me with various bikes so changing the shock out was part of my original plan.
I looked at ohlins, ktech, and penske. All are good shocks and offer similar performance. Ohlins and ktech both have production shocks for Harley. With Penske I would have had to spec out my shock for them to make. Ultimately I went with ohins for one main reason. My riding is 50/50 solo and 2 up. Ohlins offers a hydraulic preload adjuster. It's just a bit easier to adjust the preload when going from 1up to 2 up and back.
WorksPerformance... as stated above, give them a call. Outstanding custom shocks which will be dialed in for your exact needs. One of the best upgrades on had on my Fat Bob.
awesome information , i'll definitely follow up on the works and ohlins and also speak with Howard.
Those fork cartridges for ohlins are pricey! Has anyone tried the progressive fork cartridges? Those are 1/3 of the price, are they 1/3 of the quality / ride?
The ohlins front catridges in general are just too much coin for approx. $1500. How decent are these progressive front catridges? Not much reviews on these, considering they are only available on the 06+ dyna's.

GREENOHAWK69 (real name hidden because of Chrome-A-Files) has the only set of made for him chrome shocks that I have ever seen in the world. I think he may take them off his bike and attach it to his chain (around his neck) when visiting the Retro Disco.
