You're probably taking the crank case bolt out and not the separate oil tank drain plug. Reason you got any was you drained the small amount that normally runs in sump and since bike has not been started, there is none now. However, you really should not be using this plug for oil changes. Just guessing however.
The underside plugs of Harley's unless you have a manual are not what they seem and over the years have changed. If Harley motor company had any sense, they would label them. However, if they did that, it would appear that is was OK for the owner to change fluid or if he happened to drain transmission and not realize it and tear it up, they would loose out on a big dollar repair. Or you happened to crack the block with the tapered plug for checking sumping. (someone did on here not too long ago)
