Don't waste your money on this, it's all about throttle control and clutch play you need to master to ride most bikes. The 250's are too light and you will outgrow it too fast. Here's the most cost effective way based on my experience.

1. Take the lessons, learn on a 250 during this period
2. Buy a low priced bike that you don't care to drop. Heavier the better since every bike after this will feel like a feather to you.
Reason: You won't be scared to drop it. This is where you refine your skills and push some of your limits. If you're not scare of dropping it, you won't ride like a little girl.
3. After that, buy the bike you want. Your confidence has been built up, and you may have a few crashes under your belt so you know where your limits are and you're not afraid. You won't take much of a loss on an old bike since most of the depreciation has already been done.

My list of bikes:
1. School bike 250 through lessons
2. 89 GSXR 750 (this thing was a tank, but I learned to toss it around after a year)
3. 99 Yamaha r6 : At this point , I felt like I was riding a toy, I felt super confident with the weight drop. Also raced this bike for a few years.
4. 2009 GSXR 750 & 600 - Street only
5. 2015 Street Bob (this thing is so easy to ride compared to sport bikes. Less balancing required and counter steer / leaning)

In my opinion, easier to go from sport bikes to cruiser than vice versa. The agility and balance it takes to ride a sport bike hard through twisties is quite technical and doing slow speed turns is a challenge for anyone with sh!tty clutch and throttle skills. Take my experience for what it's worth.
I agree with most of this except not starting on a 250. Not only is it a good idea, but they're fun as heck! Ride the **** out of one and don't care about dropping it. I got more tickets on my ninja 250's than I have on any other bike, including a good ticket for reckless driving haha. This is a great bike to master throttle control and braking.

If I had the room for one, I'd purchase another

Thanks for all the responses everyone.

Also, I'm taking the course at Harley Davidson of Austin, TX.

They'll have us learning to ride on this bike

Okay, so I'm looking at this bike, the guy that's selling it, says it was his fathers. He doesn't ride it. He doesn't know what mods were made to it but he does know some. I would love to own this specific model though.

It's a 2003 Harley Dyna Super Glide Sport FXDX 14k miles only, that's good right?

100th anniversary Harley Davidson FXDX super glyde sport. Beautiful ,fast ,fun and loud Harley ..mini apes , Vance and Hines pipes ..detachable sissy bar. Runs great all the info he really has on it, clean title. He's only asking 5500, wish I had a professional to come help me and look at it to tell me if it's worth the buy since I don't know much. Thoughts?

First off, That's not an FXDX, it's an FXD (No dual disc and no adjustable forks)
If it is an FXDX, someone changed the front end out and some other stuff too.
It looks to me like the right mirror is different from the left mirror and the rocker boxes have been changed out.
Have someone look it over really well and make sure it hasn't been wrecked. (salvage title?)
If it hasn't been wrecked and the mileage is accurate, it's still a nice motorcycle and is worth the money in my honest opinion.

Hmmm, yeah. Well the VIN checks out, says FXDX. Guess a lot of changes were made. Also, missed the part where he said it has a new front end but listed that as an upgrade that was done? Says clean title. I'll see what I can do, have to travel out an hour and a half to see it.

Go see it, but there have been a lot of changes made to that bike from what I can see.
It might say "clean title" in the ad but I'd be very curious about some of the strange changes to that bike.

I of all people understand the concept of completely changing a bike to suit your own needs (mine used to be an FXDWG and now it's more of an FXDX) but the mismatched engine covers and mirrors and the low rider front end just make me wonder what's really going on with that bike.

I have the 2003 fxdxt. Compared to this... nothing is the same... I'd bet money that the thing was crashed pretty good and everything replaced with cheap parts. Get a 250

Don't waste your time, this bike had "bad" written all over it.

That front end is not an "upgade" by any definition of the word...

The FXDX came with the best adjustable/dual disc front end ever put on a big twin and this guy replaced it with a hacked up single disc lowered front end. (piece of ****)
