Is there anyway you can put the shaft extension on backwards and still get everything to bolt together right? I only ask because I don't remember making sure the flat side was on the alternator rotor. I doubt it would go back together and I REALLY doubt I would put it on backwards but in doing my mental review, I don't remember making sure the flat side was where it's supposed to be. I attached the link so folks would understand what I am talking about. I know this sounds insane but I always go back and mentally review work I do. I'd hate to have to pull the compensator apart just to check but I would do it for piece of mine. OCD I guess...
Away from my bike right now, and I do have my primary open too. My memory tells me the sprocket retainer sits inside the non flat side of the shaft extension, so I would think when you were putting it together that it(all the compensator parts)would not "pack" very well at all if the shaft extension was backwards...would be all loose as you try to install the compensator bolt.
Have not tried it the wrong way however so speculating a bit.
The flat side goes against the alternator rotor--according to instructions--PDF available on harley website. Edit--I must have misread your question- sorry for useless response--

Reason: never mind-I see you have PDF from your link
I don't remember at all...I have done these before so I am aware of what I should have done. I just don't remember validating. I'm 99% sure it is in right. I think HD Pilot is right though. It seems like it would leave the compensator and spring pack loose so it should clunk like a comp going bad. Just wish I was 100%...
Don't think you can possibly installed it wrong. See my post. When there is doubt, see diagram. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-glide-models/1004741-se-compensator-42200064a-upgrade-w-pics.html

I look at the video again and refresh my memory. I think you could possibly installed it wrong since the extension goes both way. I think if you install the sleeve backwards, the compensator gear will stick out more and may not line up the chain. If there is doubt, open it up and check. Better safe than sorry!
