Default Help with apes

Started my 40 mile ride home tonight and everything was fine. Going down a hill running around 55 when I started over a bridge. At the end of the bridge the transition to the asphalt was rough and I hita bump, I tightened my grip on the apes, and they moved towards me. Not far, maybe an inch or so, but regardless, I was still scared @#itless. I pulled over, and tested them to see if they would move again, they didn't. I carefully rode to an auto parts store and borrowed an allan wrench to check the handle bar clamp bolts, all were tight. I have 16" apes, and they are knurled. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? Anyone have any advice as to how to get those things to stay in place so this doesn't happen again? Thanks

Dang dude, that's some crazy stuff. Did you have a dealer / independent mechanic install? If so, I would ask them about it. If you did it yourself I would call a local independent Harley mechanic shop and ask them if they have any suggestions. I don't have any ideas other than spot welding that biatch in place, but that wouldn't look so good and would make it tough to take the bars off if you ever needed to.

Happened to me a couple times. I tightened down on the bolts real good. 3/8 drive ratchet with allen socket. Hasn't moved for quite a while. There was a thread in the past about this on here.

You can take some fine grit sand paper (something like 600 grit) and put around the bars in the riser. This will keep them from slipping. My last bike would do it occasionally until I did that.

Thanks for the advice. I had a dealer put them in, I will be making a trip there today to see what they have to say about it.

My bars move a little if I hit a big enough bump. I tighten them down every few rides or so. You can't get enough torque with a standard allen wrench you need to use a socket or at least put a piece of pipe over the allen and really get those suckers tight. I don't see the dealer being much help here because they won't be able to recreate the problem on a test ride.

Hogrida you were right, the dealer wasn't much help all they said was they used "the enforcer" (I'm assuming a piece of pipe over the ratchet) and got a 1/2 turn more on all 4 bolts, ride home was fine. I'll take your advice and tighten them myself every few hundred miles.

Happens every once in a while with me too. I tightened them way past specs last time and they haven't budged since.

THE IDEAL WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IS WITH DOWS ,
1 get some solid stainless steel dows/pins not sure wat u guys call them over there
2set ur bars were u want them 4 good
3mark with a felt pen , on the top in the centre of bars on 1 side or both
4 take top clamp of risers/the 4 bolts
5drill 1 hole each side direct above the line of ur risres, dows need to be a real tight fit
6 red lock tight ur dows into the holes in ur top riser plate, ON THE INSIDE THIS IS
7 when locktight dry, get a mate to hold ur bars on ur bottom risers, with the pen marks were u want the bars to sit, u put the top riser plate on, and tighten all 4 bolts up at the same time, ur aiming at putting dents/marks in ur bars[ use a little paint etc aswell if u like]or put a point like a pen on the end to go inside ur bars
8 pull top riser of and drill the 2 holes in ur bars, remember the tight drill hole, also check that the dows will not hit ur internal wires
9 put ur bars on and enjoy the none movment of ur apes
