My Dyna does this about 50 to 60 percent of the time. Its a 2005 Dyna Low 1450 88. When I start it it will snort and back fire then start. Its fuel injected, has new nickel plugs and a new Duracell battery. Before I take it into the shop I was wondering if there was something simple to look at. Thanks for any help. One of the times it sent a small burp of white smoke out the air intake.
On a carb, it is called a carb fart. Same thing with EFI, it is generally a sign of a not-quite-perfect tune, but generally bikes with the issue run well. Maybe hook a tuner up to it?
The fuel injection systems on that year were pretty basic, by todays standards. If you have some miles on it maybe run some sea foam in a fresh tank of gas, the injectors could be clogged. The crank position sensor triggers the firing of the ECM to coil to plugs, high miles and the sensor goes out. One more stab at this, if you are releasing the start button too soon, there may be a kickback on start. May carb bike does this if I get a little anxious on the start. Good luck.

Its been sitting all summer. I live in Fla, and its too hot to ride in summer. What is sea foam? Is that the actual name of the injector cleaner?
It is NEVER too hot to ride...just too hot to sit in traffic.
Seafoam is another snake-oil fuel additive rumored to neutralize old fuel and clean fouled injectors. I don't use the stuff except when I think I may have water contaminated fuel because it does bind to the water molecules and burns through. I have used all the different fuel system additives but I never found any of it to be useful poured into the tank.
You really shouldn't need to run any of that stuff to clean injectors unless you are running too rich or dirty and fouling them out. Sitting for 90 days or so with fuel in the tank should not cause any issues, and fuel in the system for that short of a period of time definitely should not foul the injectors. The only real way to clean injectors is to take them out and clean and pressure check them and check the spray pattern.
The previous owner put on one of those computer modules that optimizes the timing. its called a dynojet. Maybe that is causing some problem.
Maybe that is causing the problem. The settings may have been corrupted or changed, so find out how to program that particular model and start over with new settings.
You can also remove it and see if the issues are still there. If not, either the unit is bad or just needs to be adjusted. Those piggyback things are prone to getting wet and acting badly. Did you just wash it or ride in a heavy rain? Check the connector and make sure it's dry and tight.
Also, you mentioned nickel plugs. Not exactly sure what you mean, but pull them and take a look. Try a set of stock plugs.
These are all simple things you can do on your own, before you have to spend money taking it to a shop.
Well I pulled the plugs, first plug was fine, a bit gray but clean, second plug front jug was black carbon built up. It was hard carbon black build up. Not sure what would cause that.I will get a new set of NGKs and put them in.
My scoot started doing the same thing when cold, seemed to go away as it warmed up. Suggest you try cleaning the IAC sensor with some carb cleaner, read about it on this forum (https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...like-crap.html), 10 minute job, bike runs great now. If you never have cleaned it I would put my money on a dirty IAC. Good luck.
