Default Do you need a tune with VH shorts?

Have a new 2016 FatBoy and want to go with VH shortshots staggered.
But do I need to re-tune/dyna after installing the pipes?

Thx

Any time you change how the air is flowing through the engine, you should be retuning the bike.

Can't decide between the VH slips-ons or the shortshots.
The slip-ons sound abit muffled but don't need retune with these, plus you keep the upper part of the pipes and the originals look good with the cut-outs on the heat-shield.
But the shortshots sound much better (hope the neighbors can live with it) but need to retune..

Decisions.

Thx

By their nature the Short Shots will kill your low and mid range performance, I wouldn't consider them myself without adding a Power Vision from FuelMoto to begin to properly tune for the changes they bring. I'd also add DK Custom Thunder Torque Inserts to the Short Shots, W158's with the baffles removed to help bring back the low's and mids and get that bright rasp out of the sound; the TTI's deepen the tone of the pipes very nicely

I ran the Shortshots on my 2012 Dyna for a couple of weeks without a tune. I then installed a V&H FP3 and flashed the ECM with the corresponding map. Best $300 I ever spent. Runs smoother at all RPMs/throttle openings and almost totally eliminated the annoying deceleration popping.

And this is it, the FP3 does a great job if you don't plan on moving past a Stage 1, a correct tune is the only way to run the Short Shots. And since when you change the exhaust to a full system this bears repeating: the decel popping is not a lean issue like your dealer may try and convince you it is. It has to do with fresh air mixing with unburnt fuel coming out of the engine under off throttle situations and can be corrected by altering decel and V/E tables in the tuner, another reason I recommended the TTI's for the Short Shots, they work wonders preventing reversion in the exhaust...

That's a terrible choice for exhaust. The stock mufflers outperform shortshots for everyday riding.....

I wouldn't run short shots. Have them on my low rider because I found them in a tent sale for under $200 new. So I grabbed them and put them on. They sound good under throttle if you want LOUD but they pop and snort and makes all kinds of racket on decel. I also noticed a drop in low end torque for sure. I would be looking for new pipes right now if I wasn't in the process of trying to lemon law this bike. Next bike will not have those pipes.

If you are leaving the air cleaner alone, then just doing the exhaust you don't "need" to retune.

It will run better if you do, but then, it will run better if you retune and leave the stock exhaust on also.

Short shots or V&H slip-ons run very strong if you put some Thunder Torque Inserts in them. Much Stronger than the stock pipes...and you might like the sound better too.

Another, less expensive option to get a good sound, and a good bump in power across the entire band is to modify your stock exhaust with TTI's.

Below are several videos to give you an idea of what can be done.
