Default Stock gas gauge cap mod

So I got the speedo/tach combo for my 09 fat Bob. I am now wanting to get the RSD dummy cap and gas cap (matches my intake). I've done some reading and found out you need the electronics from the stock gauge to remain in the circuit for the fuel gauge on the tach/speedo to work. I also read about how you can guy the electronics out of the fuel gauge, but I didn't see a procedure or pics.

Can someone point me to something helpful? I'd like to be able to not destroy the stock gauge if possible, but if that's what's needed then so be it.

OK, did not pick up on the dummy cap part.... the Thread will probably not help much then.

Doesn't HD make a variety of gas cap medallions? You could put one on both the gas cap and gauge.

Tstroud - yes they do, but I have read that the curvature of the gas gauge "cap" is different and it takes some modifying to fit it. Seems like HD missed the boat here some on these gas caps/gauges - or maybe they knew what they were doing and figure one will buy their LED ones...which I'd be ok with, if they made one I liked.

i'm looking at the flushmount black gas/gauge kit. i just cant see myself paying 175 for the set knowing that folks have had issues and that a non-LED set cost $20... and i waste a lot of money

hd kit:

20 bucks:

OP:

in terms of the medallions, they come with extra 3m tape to accommodate the curves. i have one on my sportster and another just hanging on the wall that i never installed.

i'll post a picture of the contents and test fit for you later.

cvaria - problem with the ebay ones are it appears, according to the description, that these fit bikes with 2 screw in caps. the gauge isn't actually screw in and I've been told the diameter of the hole isn't the same as the fuel hole...

I'd also worry about a $25 set leaking fuel.

leaking: this is a valid concern.

fit: haven't tried it. i didn't pull the trigger on the 20's because they don't look right. i'll check the fitment later when i take the pictures for you of the medallion package contents

The medallions are a tiny bit too domed, however by using the supplied tape disk and an extra piece of two sides tape on the center, they fit well. I have had these on for a couple months. They have discontinued this particular design though. Surprising that they do not get the curve 100% right and have more designs, but then they make less on these perhaps.

Are the caps flexible enough to push the curvature down and not pull the tape away? Hell- I'd be ok using epoxy on them even to secure them. I usually like to make mods reversible but these caps aren't a major mod - plus, it's not like I'll be going back to the stock speedo. The only real downfall is if you epoxy them on and then later decide you don't like them...
