Long rant short: I'm no fairing newb, I had a Ness and a Rifle on my 07 Sbob, currently have a JD on my 02 Defender.
I'm looking at an 02 FXDX and it has the top mount headlight with the brow. I hear these are a total PIA and it's almost making me rethink buying the bike. Is my only option for a fairing to drill the bottom triple tree and relocate with a newer version headlight bucket, OR is there any other fix that someone has figured out? Thanks!
Not a direct answer,
But I've talked to a lot of folks that have the very problem you have here, not so much about the faring but that the headlamp is a POS.
I don't know why folks won't do the fix you mention, drill the hole and add a lower mount bucket
i put a jd on my lowrider that had a top mount headlight. I bought a bottom mount bucket of fleabay for super cheap. Most fairings i have used in the past, including this one, come with a headlight relocation bracket for bottom mount.
So really all you will have to buy is a new bucket. Drilling the tree is not too big of a deal plus if you ever go back to a top mount, they make a little chrome plug that presses into the hole.
MY 14 lowrider like i said was top mount, but the bottom tree already had the hole drilled and there was a little plug in it from the factory. i never even noticed it till i went to do the fairing work
If you are wanting to run a TSport style fairing then the OEM TSport fairing brackets or Bung King 39mm mounts are designed to use the brow mount headlight. This you already have the preferred setup.
