Question Cam chest rebuild?

I have an 05 FXDLi (second hand, so I don't know how it was treated for the first 5 years) that's been regularly serviced and is now showing about 23,000 miles.

Took her to an H-D dealer recently as it was close to where I was working and needed a replacement tire (picked up a nail). They suggested I'd probably need a cam chest rebuild pretty soon (and quoted around $2k). My usual mechanic (who's usually pretty busy so tends not to oversell) wasn't sure but quoted around $1.1k for a rebuild.

Question is ... do I need it, and what should I look out for to tell me if I really should start saving up (also have to replace the transmission on my Jeep - over 100k miles and starting to whine!)

(relatively new to the Harley world after having sport bikes for the last 20 years, and I've never owned a bike for this long so getting into all sorts of unknown territory!)

When they say cam chest rebuild does that include replacing cams, lifters, oil pump, cam bearings?
23.000 miles shouldn't require much attention in there .
I'm in the middle of changing my cams and lifters, upgraded cam tensioners, quickie push rods, gaskets and tools. I spent near $800.00 and doing the work myself.
My outside chain tensioner had minor wear and the inside one looked new.
I have 25K on it.

It would be worth your while to at least look at the tensioners. Pick up a Harley (not Clymer) service manual. Replace the inner cam bearings with Torrington bearings, and possibly replace the tensioners. if you do replace them, go with Cyco shoes.

If you plan on doing any performance upgrades, the kits available to update your camchest to '07 and up is worth a look.

I suspect the $2k that HD quoted is for upgrading the tensioners to the post 2006 Hydraulic design? I guess your area is more expensive than average around the country, what is the hourly rate there?

make sure they replace the cam bearings too.

around here you can get the hydraulic kit dealer installed for about $1200. They recommend checking the tensioners at 30,000 miles, You might want to at least have them checked to be safe but they should be good for at least another 5k
