I have to not turn mine on unless I have it off the side stand when is half full or I get the light no mods yet. I get about 43 to 45 city about 48 highway. I usually fill up about 150 to 160 and it takes anywhere from 3.0 to 4.0 to fill it. I have se II's and se breather and pc III that i hope to be installing this weekend. I do not go by the light I go but the trip meter. most lights I have seen on anything over the years usually comes on after its to late or way to early.

Yes, definitely go by the odometer reading and pay no attention to the gauge, which is obviously way off. You have an A and B tripmeter on the speedometer, just set that to zero, and when you get to a predetermined mileage, 150, whatever, it's time to fill up. As long as you know there is fuel ahead, it's foolproof unless you're running wide open and your mileage tanks. If you're not sure about gas for a while, fill up at 2/3 of your normal mileage rating.

The gas gauge on my carb'd Dyna is pretty accurate, but not foolproof, but then again, we have a reserve on our carb bikes. Just one more anti-stupidity tool for us.

06 bob w/ almost 11k miles k&n ac,thunder header 2 into 1 w/ PCIII 36 miles a gallon
gas light goes on around 120-130 miles
will come on sooner if i start the bike on its side or if i am on a road going uphill, i assume gas goes towards the rear of the tank away form the gas guage sending unit. same is true when i stop, fuel will slosh forward and show more gas for a moment.
i ride 45 miles each way each day to work.
typically i put 3.7+ gallons in and have about 136 miles on the tank which = 36mpg roughly.
like everyone else said, fill up your tank, go ride, when the light goes on take note of how much fuel you put in then take the mileage and divide that by the gallons you fill up with and you will know for sure what your mpg is. good luck.

06 Bob here. I get 36 mpg and ride fairly hard but even on the road driving as conservatively as possibleI only get 38 to 40 mpg tops. I wish I knew how these guys were getting 45 and 50 mph. I have no modes to my bike. If my light comes on early because the bike was only around half full and started on the side stand I just turn it off for a second at the first stop that I make (the corner, light or stop and go traffic) and turn it back on again and the light then stays off until it is time for it to come on. It is either that or wait until the guage gets over the reserve (red) area of the guage before you turnstart if up the first time. If your light comes on at 80 miles and your guage is accurate then you have used 3 gallons in 80 miles which would mean you are getting 27 mph. Fill it up as soon as the lightcomes on and if it takes 3 gallons thenthe guageis accurate.

I'm w/ you footpeg - can't seem to break the 40MPG barrier! Have theSE StageI, SE II slips, K&N filter, BCT baffles and TFI - deliberately run a little rich and do ride 'er hard....

I myself have never been closer than 5 mpg shy of 50. I consistently get between 40 and 44mpg. This was withno mods at all. Now I have the 95" installed and I assume my gas mileage will go up to 60mpg

I can't say that I've taken the time to calculate my MPG. I just know with the rising cost of fuel, it's painful to need more than $10 to fill up. It has been my experience that turning the ignition on while the bike is on the side stand, will cause the warning light to come on early. The dealer explained that the fuel sensor was on the right side of the tank, causing a false low reading when on the side stand. This is my first bike with fuel gauge, so I'm still relying heavily on mileage.
