Default How much primary oil?

The Clymer says to use between 32-40 oz depending on wet/dry. The Baker site calls for more. There are some that say that the final level needs to be onto the diaphragm spring, others say to come up to the level of the opening. There is about 1/2 inch difference between the spring and the lip. The dyna with 32 oz of oil comes close to the lower level of the diaphragm spring. Since there is so much to-do with lack of lube on the comp, I want to try to keep things cool. Any thoughts on oil level appreciated. Not sure whether full to the lip is a problem, or not...aeration, whipping, etc?? I will try to measure how many oz from the lower spring to the lip...you may say that this is a bit ****....could be right.

I guess if you had a factory authorized Service Manual you'd know the correct answer. Go spend $48 and file the Clymer.

I agree with OldEnuf, but IIRC the service manual says they same as your Clymer.

BUT... I would go with the rec's of whoever's product you are running...

1 quart if it's a change. taste it when you're done and add a little to taste until it covers the chain at the sprocket on the clutch basket with the bike standing straight up doing a salute.

My mother would tell me that if you don't have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut. I suspect that shudnobtr never got that message....but thanks to the rest for the help. I bought my first car in '62 and promptly took the engine apart, and my first bike in '67, and have rebuilt quite a few MC engines for me and friends since. I try to continue to learn something, no matter how painful it is to ask a question sometimes.

I used this pic the first time I opened up my 14' FXDF. It came out to be right at 32oz.

Yep... checked the level while filling... turns out, 1 quart is about right... I don't worry about it any more... when I change.. I dump in a new quart and call it good.
