My speedometer has a check engine light on while riding it. When I am in neutral, everything seems fine. Once I shift to 2nd gear the check engine light comes on and speedometer needle stops working.
Help please!
Remove the vehicle speed sensor on right side of transmission housing and wipe the crap off the magnet. Be careful not to damage the O ring taking it out or putting it back in. The single Allen that holds it is torqued to 85 INCH pounds or so.
That's all I got and it's a guess. But it's cheap.

So I took the sensor out and it was very clean, but still wiped it clean. I took it for a drive and still doing the same thing. I can be in neutral and see my mileage and no check engine light, but as soon as I put it in 1st and drive a little bit, it stops at 20mph and the check engine light comes on and the mileage disappears. Once I come to a stop the mileage comes back.
Look under the headlight visor there will be a 12 pin plug connector. Unplug it, blow it out with contact cleaner and then apply some dielectric grease and plug it back in.
If you have good battery voltage with the engine off, good stator performance while the engine is running and the plug wasn't fouled it's either a bad VSS or speedo. My money say if all that stuff checks out, bad Vehicle Speed Sensor.

I will check the 12 pin plug connector. I just put a brand new battery in it. It was doing the same thing with the old battery.
Hate to buy a new Speedo, but need my ol boy running right. I cleaned the sensor, but replacing it is cheaper than the speedo.

One other thought. Trace the VSS wire to where it plugs in under the seat. Look for any breaks or cuts and clean and check that plug as well.
Also, just because the battery has recently been replaced doesn't mean there isn't stator or reg/rec trouble. All it takes is a volt meter on the battery terminals while it's running to check.

I am having no luck with this and hate to buy a VSS, but looks like I am better off replacing that for now to see if that helps.
VSS wire has no breaks in it, the sensor is clean and voltage is right.

I just heard this today so all I'm doing is repeating something but it sounds like it'll work.
Ride the bike and engage one of the turn signals. If the VSS is bad it won't cancel.
