Default FXDX - Would you?

I have a lead on a pretty much unmolested 2000 FXDX (14k miles) that needs a new home. It has some accessories on it (bags, windshield, fat-*** seat, sissy bar) that I figure I could sell on ebay to recoup some money for a stage one.

I haven't seen the bike in person yet but hopefully will this week if the weather holds out. When talking with the owner it sounds like he just hasn't been able to ride it for the last few years due to health problems and it is just taking up space in his garage. Needless to say I mentioned I could scrape up about $4k for it and he didn't bat an eye. He wants it gone.

Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't jump all over this deal? After selling off the accessories and doing a few things to the bike to make it look as it should (new pipes, seat, 1/4 fairing, grips, carb rebuild, etc) I figure I will have about $5-6k into it.

Seeing as how I already have a 2012 Road Glide I really have no need of a Dyna sitting in my garage but I should be able to sell the FXDX and get my money back don't you think? Maybe even make a couple of bucks?

C'mon people, help me sell this idea to the boss(wife).

IMO at 4K if you're keeping it, it's a good deal. If you're thinking about putting $ into it and having 5-6 into it, now you're getting near what it may sell for, so it's a gamble I think. I was looking at a 2000 FXDX a couple years ago, and from a dealer they wanted $7000 and it had pipes, a shield and bags, and pretty much the same miles. The consensus here was that it was a bit overpriced. So again, just my opinion. For 4K to buy and keep, good deal. To buy, fix up and resell, maybe not so much.

This is an option also,

We just put a 1250 kit in the sportster so the boy is really happy with the bike now. If I had to guess, he would be even happier with the Dyna though.

Decisions, decisions

It won't keep up with the 1250 kit sportster . But will be a better ride.

I'd do it, there's a 2001 FXDX here in rough shape (cosmetically beat up, mechanically has had some things rebuilt it should not have had issues with that early) with 50k on it that the dealer is asking 7k for (has same accessories, windshield, bags, sissy bar).

The FXDX was built as a canyon carver. it's stock height was maybe an inch higher than the FXD for extra clearance in the turns. Good find, shouldn't be a problem flippin' it.

If you are looking at this solely as a business opportunity, it might not really pay off that much.
If this is a hobby, a fun project, a learning experience, etc. then it seems like a great deal.

Seeing as how I already have running bikes this one would be one that I could play with and it wouldn't bother me if it was down for a week or so. I like to "tinker" and this bike might just fit the bill.

I am not too worried about making any profit on the bike if I were to sell it. As long as I don't lose money Mama will be happy.
