When I first removed the bulb and saw all the grease on the contacts, I wiped it off and cleaned out the receptacle a bit, with a rag; didn't make a difference.
Then a friend mentioned the tendency of the factory to load too much grease in there, and I took the bulb back out, wiped off the contacts again, and this time took some q-tips and alcohol to the receptacle; works fine now.
I read somewhere once that can-bus doesn't tolerate as much dielectric grease as non-can-bus.

Can-Bus should have nothing to do with it. It should still be a metal to metal contact. The grease just keeps the water from contacting the metal parts.
