Default Post break in oil change

Hey everyone,

So I just purchased a 2016 FXDB and was wondering about the post break in oil change. Im hearing two things.. Friend states that after 500 miles I need to do all the fluids and all that and the dealer says at 1000 miles I need to come in for all that.

Do I just wait for the 1000 miles to bring it in or do I do all the fluid changes at 500 miles?

If you want to be really thorough, do both. I would just do it myself at 1,000 miles. The 500 won't hurt, but I don't think it's necessary. Also check other items wearing in, belt tension, steering head bearing, fastener tightness, etc.

Should I go through Harley for the 1000 mile break in check up? The dude said its good to do the first one through them for warranty reasons. His words were "to protect myself".

Yes go back to HD for your 1,000. check up. They replace all the fluids and also check for loose bolts and connectors. After that in depends what type of oil you plan to run. Most recommend synthetic oil which can last for 5,000. mi. Consult you manual that came with your bike.

Two new Harleys. Neither ever have been to the dealer. Have done all services myself.

The first 1,000 miles check is nothing more than a very expensive oil change. (all three holes of course)

Just keep receipts for the oil and filter. Will not void the warranty.

Money you save can buy a motorcycle jack, torque wrench, oil filter wrench, etc. Plus you learn so much more about your bike.

The 1000 mile dealer service should also include adjusting the clutch, adjusting the primary chain, adjusting the belt tension, adjusting the steering head bearings, checking all the critical fasteners, and several others visual checks of the brakes, cables, exhaust etc.

I just had the dealer do the 1000 and 5000 mile services while I was still under warranty. Now I'll do most of it myself except maybe rebuilding the forks

Change the oil at 500 miles and do the 1000 mile service when it is due.

You should be able to tell by looking at it. I changed mine at 400 when I bought my 2014 new. I dropped the Primary at the same time, and they both needed it. For good measure I droped the transmition as well but that was very clean and could have waited for the 1000 mile mark. Comming from dirt bikes, I've always based the change off of color and what type of riding I do or expect to be doing in the near future, not milage.
