Default Install Pipes and Cleaner or Wait for Tuner

Hello Everybody,

I recently took ownership of a bone stock 2011 Super Glide, so of course the first thing I do is put in an order for some upgrades: Bassani Road Rage pipes, an SE Heavy Breather air cleaner, a Vance and Hines FP-3 tuner, and some other less techinical adornments.

I'm very much excited about getting all my new investments bolted up except that the FP-3 for the '11 vintage Dynas has yet to be released!!! Now in my garage sits those beautiful pipes and air cleaner waiting.

I suppose the smart thing to do is wait, except that the expected delivery of the FP-3 seems to keep moving further out and you can imagine the struggle of having to step over the parts boxes in order to get to my bike every morning!

My options are as follows:
1.) continue to wait for the FP-3
2.) install one or both of my performance upgrades without tuner.
3.) cancel the order for the FP-3 and get a different tuner that is currently available.

Any advice or commiseration is greatly appreciated!

They need to go on together, or you will be bummed.

Either get a different tuner, say a PowerVision from FuelMoto...or wait.

I would install the pipes. Do the intake and tuner when it gets there. At least you get to enjoy the sound of the motor while you're waiting.

I would go with tuner, cleaner, then pipe. The tuner works for a stock bike and will correct the stock lean tune.

That said, I got all three at the same time.

I would wait.

When I upgraded, I got the air cleaner first, while waiting on a tuner and pipes. Decided to go ahead and install the cleaner...couldn't wait of course.

While I had no major problems, It seemed to run hotter. And on checking the plugs, they were as white as a piece of chalk. Leaned it way out.

The tuner, for me, seemed to be the most important piece. Getting the right amount of fuel for the mods made the biggest difference in performance, heat, plug color, etc...

Definitely tuner. I did the pipes and cleaner on mine before I had the tuner (only had to wait a week), but just had massive overheating and tons of backfiring. I actually hated the sound of it. The FP3 is awesome, but if it doesn't have your map I'd say run with a different tuner. There's a lot of good ones out there.

I agree, the bikes computer will compensate for one or the other but be too lean with both.. the pipe are the longest job time wise and I would get them out of the way to enjoy the sound as nevil said and once the tuner comes in you can have the AC on in less than 45 minutes

How did you conclude that you had massive overheating? Did you score cylinders, burn the valves, or something?
