1999 FXDX Newbie Build Help
The "spirit" of the club bike is function over fashion. If you have an ugly *** fairing or pipe or whatever, but you're still hauling *** and ripping the twisties, that's what it's all about. Look around and see what you like, but shop around in-person and see what fits you best.
Patience. Read and learn! There are millions of options and only you can determine what's right for you. Ride your bike as it is and get to know it while you decide what you want to do. Not every solution is easy.
Not trying to be a dick. Just seems like you're trying to take shortcuts and that's never gonna end well.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I went with a HD 1/4 fairing, but if I had a DX, I would have certainly gone with a JD fab XT repop. I believe you can order the entire clamp, and fairing setup direct from them.
Bars.... Your current setup looks like you can go as high as you want with any T-bar, or bar / riser combo. I have 12" West Coast Slingshot bars. From the looks of how things are going right now, the tall riser, and tracker style bars are what seems to be "in". Also, if a solid, non adjustable setup is what you're after, Have a look at Lucky Daves. All these bar setups are straight forward on install, and tool requirements.
As for shocks... Works is basically the new standard on rear shock upgrades. I was going to get a set, but ended up choking up a few extra bucks for a set of Ohlins HD 816. Works will customize your order to your weight, and ride style... And at a good price. Also check out the Hagon Nitros. Rebound, and preload adjustable, for about $550 or less. AS previously stated, 13.5 was stock for your bike, but you can probably go longer, or shorter depending on how hard you ride.
Pipes... T Header is yet another "standard". It's all all about opinion, but I personally think there's nothing more "Harley" out there than a T Header. Yeah, I went with a Bassani, and I love it.... If I had to do it over again, I would have ordered a SPF pipe. Sawicki makes a ridiculously beautiful, and great sounding pipe as well.
At the end of the day, you will need to start with one mod, research what others have done to make it work, and go from there. Take your time, and think your mods through.... Like I said, if I could do it over, I would have ordered an SPF pipe. Still probably will at some point, but right now I'm focusing on performance, and functionality.... Thinking it through is how I ended up ordering the Ohlins over the Works.... Long term is the key.
