Default Dyna luggage

I just recently purchased a 2002 wide glide and am having some difficulties with my luggage options. What I like doesn't seem to be available for my bike. I found a swing arm bag that is for '06-later Dyna's, and the only difference I can find is 1/2' less ground clearance on the '02. Does anybody have any idea if this bag will fit my bike? I'm sure that 1/2" difference can not be what prevents it from being compatable.

I have never ran swingarm bags and as a result really did not know how they mounted, however I do know that the passenger footpegs are mounted different on an 02 than an 06 and suspected that may play into mounting the bracket for a swingarm bag.

A little research showed that is correct

On an 06 the passenger peg mounts attach directly into the swingarm, on the left side there is a tab where the front bolt for the top belt guard attaches. On your 02 the passenger pegs are not mounted directly on the swing arm. Below are two part diagrams for foot peg assembly so you can see what I am talking about. In each diagram look at the 3rd diagram from the top

06 Foot peg mount. Parts 19 and 20 are the footpeg mounts that bolt directly onto the swing arm. Notice on part 20 which is the left side mount you see the tab on top where the belt guard attaches and is also use as a mounting location for your swingarm bag frame

02 Foot Peg mount. Parts 20 and 28 are the footpeg mounts with part 28 being the mount for the left side passenger peg

Now take a look at this vid that shows how to mount a swing arm bag on a newer model dyna. You will notice that the swing arm bag bracket attaches to the left side foot peg mount. That mount is completely different on a 02 and as a result that bracket would not attach as shown in the video

To sum up this long winded response the ground clearance will have nothing really do do with the bag fitting. The issue will be how the bag bracket attaches to the bike which would have to be different on an 02 compared to an 06

I was in the same situation with my 01 wide glide. I ended up with a single side bag from Bad&G. I am really please with what I got. Check em out at www.badgcustoms.com/

They mount to the fender strut with a leather strap.

Thank you very much for that fast and informative reply. Not sure yet how to go about fabricating a bracket. I am new to Harley Davidson, and listen to too many idiots who don't know what the heck they are talking about . Thanks again, your input was very direct and informative. You were even more help than the local custom shop!!! Thank you again. Can I add you to my contacts for future assistance?

If the bag mounts with straps you could probably find a way to make it fit. Quite a few things just take a little ingenuity!

Thanks to everybody. I do believe I can make this work. I found several diagrams and it appears all I really need to do is fabricate a small angle bracket of some sort to mount the mounting bracket to the swing arm, got some scrap metal and a BFH...
