Default Mod the Kickstand

Lots of good options for the short Dyna sidestand, including welding onto the lock tab, and adding a plate to the bottom. I also read the suggestion to get an early 90's stand that is more straight. So, I got one. Two main problems with the early kick stand are that the bend right at the pivot block was way more than 90 degrees, AND the overall length was less, meaning no improvement. So, with my stand off the bike, I heated and bent in two places. Straightened the main bend, and then added to the bend in the foot so it would sit flat. The chrome discolored, and I was able to polish it back a bit. But, this certainly now has the bike sitting properly. Only problem was the rubber bumper....now misses it by a mile. Removed the original, and built a new one from 1/2 inch black hose, like heater hose. Cut a slot, used a 2 inch clamp to secure a section of the hose to the frame just behind the original bumper location. Works fine and cannot be seen from the side. A short side note on heating and bending. Most of these steels are alloy, meaning not plain carbon steel, maybe just a nickle chrome moly that can be hardened easily. But, when I heat to about 1400 red, then bend and allow to cool, it has no heat treat hardening, yes. But, this section of side stand would hold up my truck, let alone a 700 pound bike. I would be curious to know how they build parts like this one. Heat and bend to shape. Heat, quench, then reheat and temper. Or, perhaps the steel is so strong they just use as is with no heat treating after the bending and shaping processes.

How about some pictures. I have always thought my FXDWG seemed to lay too far over on the stand myself.

The engineer in me always has me wondering the same thing every time I let the weight of the bike hit that tiny stand. It's a part that could cause a lot of damage and/or injury if it fails, and I've never heard of one failing...so I have to think the stands are forged and welded to shape, and then annealed to dead soft to eliminate internal stresses. It's anyone's guess whether they use hardening or tempering after that.

Basically, there's nothing wrong with the kick stand the way it came from the factory.
Your modification is only to satisfy your wishes and not an improvement.
If Harley Dyna models where falling over all the time,, it would be an issue,, but that's not happening.
Heat and bend all you want,, but I don't think HD is going to buy the patent.

The locking tab extension doesn't really work with the newer frames there is a rear locking hump that it has to clear. I did this to a stand and had to grind the buildup almost completely off to get the stand to deploy. Gained maybe 1/2" in bar height change while on the stand.

I always have to laugh at some of the comments. There are a ton of folks who have discussed and tried solutions to the bike on its side, and those of us who have lived on bikes occasionally have found ourselves having to park on soft ground, etc. With the excessive lean angle, my opinion after more than 50 motorcycles and 50 years of riding, I wanted a change. I am not suggesting that the minnesota riders association modify all of their bikes, nor that the moco take any action....another fantasy. I

f my pictures attach, you can see that I still need to get some blue remover. The angle changed about 5 degrees and the handlebar height went up about 1 1/2 inches on the stand at full left.

The FXDX jiffy will sit the bike up higher but they're not cheap, nor is any Harley jiffy. I didn't want to mess with welding the tab on mine or trying to heat and bend it so I just added a Bung King block to the bottom of the stand. The stuff coming off the jiffy when I drilled mine to add the block looked high carbon to me so I think it would mess with the integrity of it to heat it up too much. If the chromes still there you probably didn't hurt it. The Harley jiffy is a lot tougher than any other kickstand I've had. My old airhead's has bent a couple of times just sitting there.

Sounds like your just not happy with any bike and have to "adjust it" to what you think is better,, have at it,, have fun.
I'm just saying there's a reason (I don't know what or why) that HD has the Jiffy set up as it is. If for some reason it didn't work, they'd change it,, but they haven't.
I learned about soft ground 40yrs ago with my first bike, I've been prepared for it (or at least know what to do) ever since.
Some guy's just like to "bubba" everything they touch.
I'm sure it's an improvement.
