I started my Harley the other day after it had been sitting for a while. I decided to rev it to blow the cobwebs out so to speak. There was a shot of flame out of the bottom pipe then the engine died. I haven't been able to start it since. It turns over but doesn't ignite. Have I done something catastrophic to it??:mad
Can you email me: deathcom73@hotmail.com
Sorry about your problem but need more info.
Carb or EFI? Year? Any modifications done? How long is "sitting for a while"- couple of weeks, all winter? Did you have gas stabilizer in it? What do the plugs look like? If the battery doesn't have a full charge it could be part of the problem.
It is a 2006 Dyna Superglide Custom, fuel injected (EFI), no mods, no gas stabilizer, plugs have only just been replaced as has the suspension. It's just had its 50,000km service. It sat dorment for about 3 - 4 weeks not being started.
I have removed and tested all fuses including the 40A master fuse, both relay units, inspected the spark plugs, brought a new battery. I even tried the reset codes - nothing mate.
Confirm the basics: fuel & spark.
Can you hear the fuel pump when you hit the switch?
Confirm your plugs are sparking - pull one, put the cable back on, hold the body with a pair of pliers and hold the plier end against the fins on the head while you crank the motor.
Check to see any sensor wire are firmly attached ( crank, oil... etc).
3-4 weeks not being started is really not a big deal... but if that is going to be common, get a battery tender (low amperage trickle charger)
Sounds like your intake valve isn't opening. No idea why it'd do this after sitting though. Mice maybe? Ehhh, its probably not that, but its sounds like what it was doing to mine after I forgot to tighten the locknut on one of the adjustable pushrods I put in. It would turn over and WANT to start, but it wouldn't ever actually fire.
I had a mate of mine from Pro Street Cycles come round today and take it back to the shop. He has a diagnostic machine that should tell him what the problem is. I just hope it doesn't cost that much - I've put about $5700 into my Harley over the last few months and the Harley fund is running low now.
Thanks also to Nevil. As soon as I find out what the problem is, I'll post here so we can all laugh together...
You might have the 300 buck fuse prob I had once. Similar prob, turned out the instrument fuse was blown. I coulda sworn I had checked it along with the rest. 280 clams for a roadside rescue and 20 bucks fuse and labour cost I was going again.....
Update for you all. My Harley spent 3 days in the shop. Nick - my mate from Pro Street Cycles couldn't work out the problem so he sent it to Adelaide Bike Works. They hooked up their diagnostics machine and it works out the ECM module that runs the entire bike shutdown. No-one knows how or why it happened. Adelaide Bike Works ended up resetting / rebooting the ECM, gave it new codes, tuned it and gave it the latest programs...
My Harley sounds better now than it did before, runs awesome, everything has been tightened and there you have it...
So, I'd like to thank each of you for your input, advice, thoughts and general time to help me with this particular problem. Much appreciated guys, so thank you...
