So I've been tossing around the idea of putting a springer on my Low Rider S. The wife gave me the go ahead provided I buy her a new car first. Lets just say I've been shopping daily looking for her new ride. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to the different springer manufacturers and the ease of conversion. I'm not scared of some wrenching but I'd rather not have to custom fab tons of crap. I was looking at the Siouxicide Choppers springers. The thing I like about them is they use your stock triple trees and you just slide the new springer right in. Talking to them I found they do make a version with the 49mm downtubes so that is not an issue even though its not listed on their website. I do know that since going this route I will not be increasing the rake any and the trail is going to be reduced a bit. The guy from Siouxicide said that by dropping by rear shocks 2" it will put the trail back very close to where it is stock. I assume I could also go with a 1" drop in back and increase the fork lenght a couple inches over stock and get the same effect. Has anyone had any luck slamming the rear end on a FXDLS? It seems as though I have a bit of room between the tire and fender and I think 1" wouldn't be much of an issue at all. Does anyone have recommendations on rear shocks. I like the handling of the upgraded shocks currently and dont want to sub out something that isn't as good. The Ohlins are nice but pricey (but then again its just money). Really just looking for some input on the whole project. It will keep me busy this winter when I cant ride here in Detroit.
Oh New Member here by the way. This is my first post, although I've been lurking like a creeper since I bought me new bike this spring.
Thanks in advance for any input. And yes I know that handling will likely suffer a little with the springer but damn it's gonna look so sexy. I'm not interested in riding the thing like a sport bike anyhow.
One of the most widely acclaimed springer front end specialists has to be Sugar Bear of Sugarbearchoppers.com
If you want to go springer, make sure you do LOTS of research first. You can really screw up your front end by messing with the rake and trail if you don't know what you're doing.
Yeah it's your bike and all that happy horseshit, but that's about as absurd as putting a Springer on an FXR. You bought "probably" the best handling & performing HD coming out of the factory today, and want to put a Springer on it? I personally don't think it's going to improve the look in any way either. Sorry, but I just can't imagine why you even bought this bike
If you like what the "S" models have to offer, a Softail Slim might have been a better choice to fit with a Springer.
No need to be offended, and welcome to the forum. I just don't get it... but then again, I don't need to.

You would probably be better off selling the S, and buy a used street bob for this mod... Something out of warranty. Handling aside, the amount of work involved will probably cost you big time.
Handling wise, what you plan to do is probably equivalent to putting hydraulics and pizza cutter tires on a Ferrari. Seriously, it just sounds like a bad idea.
I can't say know a whole lot about springers, but there's a reason we NEVER see them on performance bikes. I remember reading that there is constant neck bearing maintenance issues with most springers... Also, tire hop seems to be an issue, depending on setup.
Then there's the ABS issue... It seems fairly straight forward, but fabrication and custom wheel mounting may become an issue as well.
And the end of the day, we may think you're crazy for wanting to do this to a new S, but its your bike... So who gives a chit what we think!
