Hello ladies and gents. Thinking of picking up my "first" harley. Ive been looking at this 2005 FXD. Carbed. 14K miles. Fairly stock and siting on the factory installed lowering kit. Bike belonged to the owners wife. They had the python pipes installed prior to delivery of the bike. Original owner, but all service was done at a private mom and pop shop and records weren't kept. Current owner is asking $4500. Comes with the windshield but owner doesn't have the original seat.
Ultimate goal is the FXD/FXR "Club Style" for the bike by the spring. Ive got enough time while I rehab an Achilles Rupture(I'm under 30 so everybody over 25 should be stretching everyday).
I guess I'm just looking for some advice/opinions on the bike from a photo and the asking price with the info. I know "a price is only good to you if you feel you got the deal"
Bike is below in its current state. Have a bunch i want to change while i'm on a budget and the cold weather rolls in right about he time i'm walking again. I will be changing out the bars for risers and mx setup. Still not sure Big Als, or Biltwell set up. Also thinking of picking up the Bung King crash bar and frame slider sets. A new seat and a coat of paint. Definitely going to be upgrading to the 2-1 exhaust, but still undecided which since there are so many options.
Ive been watching the dyna/club thread for months if not more than a year just gathering ideas. Just wanted to reach out to the forum and say hello.
KBB has suggested retail at 6,125 and trade in at 4,460. Of course there's all the little what about this and that he said she said **** but a good starting point. 14k miles I would think is low mileage for the number of years old the bike is. get a real good eye on the bike and see how it sounds maybe even a spin around the block if they will let you. If you like it pull our 3,900 green ones and good luck.
Cam Chain Tensioners/ Tensioner upgrade. I have seen bikes go 40K plus until needing 'em, but there is a maintenance "check" I believe its every 20K miles. tires and Brakes, theses should be showing signs of wear at that mileage. But the price is good IMO, just be aware of needed maintenance that will seem to be needed right after you purchase, as in a year or two depending how many miles you put on the bike.

Bringing a buddy over with me today. He'll take it for a spin for me(I'm on crutches and in a boot) and give it a good once over. This will be my 2nd time checking it out. Last time was just to see if it was what the pictures i was sent, and i was able to start it up and take a fast look.

I was weary of the tensioner and trying to get a bike with less than 20K unless the seller could prove he had them done. In your experience, what else may be another "upgrade" that should be down at the same time i would be needing to do the tensioner upgrade? So I can pack em all together as much as I can. Tires are about a year old and still look like they've got great tread. New battery earlier in the summer.
^^^ As far as upgrade, it looks like the bike has an exhaust system, so I would want to make sure the "Stage 1 " has been done, that is a high flow air cleaner, the high flow exhaust (looks like it already has it) and the carb tune (rejetting) to compensate for the better airflow Look up or ask your dealet or H-D tech about a "Stage 1 Upgrade for 2005 Dyna. here is a link about stage 1 upgrade. Like I said , you have the exhaust, you can at least verify the whole thing has been done, or finish it off. The exhaust is half the $$$ battle.
Tires "date of manufacture" should be stamped into the sidewall. Go by this date.
Perform a "T-CLOCS" along with a brake material check.
This is the absolute minimum as there are many other systems that should be checked on a bike you aren't familiar with.
FXD's are great btw.
