Default Frame Welding Question

I need to do a small weld repair to the cross brace which holds the voltage regulator on the lower front of the frame. The repair is where the brace connects to the frame--on the left side it's fine but the right side has about a 1/2" crack in the brace weld. The repair would just be a small quick weld. My question is, do I need to remove the gas tank to do this weld? I think doing a small weld with the tank in place would probably be okay, but I don't want to do a little weld and then go boom... Anyone done welding to the frame with the tank still in place?

I would do it, but it's your life...your risk...your decision.

Should be fine - if your still nervous throw a towel over the gas tank (to trap any vapor)

One suggestion - disconnect the bttry so there no voltage spike potential to discombobulate the computer

Completely agree with disconnecting the battery... You might also take a look at the fuel crossover line under the front of the tank, if your bike has one... Just to make sure it isn't damp at all, since it's right over that area...

Thanks guys, ya I think I'll give it a whirl. And yes, I've read it's important to disconnect the battery, unplug the ECM, and anything else which would be fried via a high electrical pulse.

Oh, and if I don't post anything for a while then you'll know it didn't work and I'm dead.

Ask yourself one question. How hard to remove the gas tank? You have the answer.

Leaving the tank on IMO is like smoking at the gas pump. Not a real smart idea. Hope it works out well for you.

...lots of great conversation and opinions here, however, has anyone actually welded on a frame with its gas tank in place? Opinions are great, but experience is what makes the difference.
