Default starter failure?

seems most days anymore I go to start the Dyna and I get a high pitch sound or clicking from the starter and it doesn't attempt to turn the motor over, if I keep after it, it eventually starts the bike

the battery has a full charge, does the starter motor tend to do this as it is going down for good?

I would say that its time for a new starter. Sounds like the starter motor is turning over, but the small gear isn't kicking into the gear to start it.

could that explain why it seems to help, to put the bike in gear, and push it? like it's causing the gear to engage?

+1 with the starter clutch. Much cheaper than a starter.

thanks brothers!

from the manual:

GENERAL

The starter is made up of an armature, field winding assembly,

solenoid, drive assembly, idler gear and drive housing.

The starter motor torque is increased through gear reduction.

The gear reduction consists of the drive pinion on the armature,

an idler gear and a clutch gear in the drive housing. The

idler gear is supported by rollers. The clutch gear is part of

the overrunning clutch/drive assembly.

The overrunning clutch is the part which engages and drives

the clutch ring gear. It also prevents the starter from overrunning.

The field windings are connected in series with

I would say it is time to get a little understanding of how this system works...

If the starter motor is spinning, the pinion and ring gears are engaged.

The starter motor will not spin until the solenoid has pushed the pinion gear into the ring gear on the clutch.

Starter clutch is the culprit (All ***** sells a great replacement unit at a price much lower than Harley).

The starters used on Harleys since the `89 model year are very durable, they are common automotive starters used on countless models of autos.
