I swapped my lace wheels for mags on my 99 fxdx. I'm having an issue with the belt rubbing the tire. The wheel seems to be in alignment. It's a sporster wheel with the stock tire size and belt. I've tried mounting the sprocket on the other side of the wheel with no change as well. Is there any reason why I would need a sprocket spacer with a stock wheel and tire? Thanks
Uhm, obviously the XL wheel and tire don't match your FXD.
They are different bikes.
If your trying a custom application of a wrong part, then you should expect to "customize" it.
If you want that wheel on your bike you will have to do what it takes to make it work.
I'd start with a tape measure or caliper,,,

What I could think of at this moment is the laced wheel has an offset that differs from the mag wheel's offset
The front pulley is quite a bit wider than the belt, so there is some room to move the belt outboard with a spacer (as I had to do on basically the same bike as yours when I got an aftermarket rear pulley). These guys make very good products (made in their shop), and are priced well. I've ordered from them a couple of times, and their service was excellent: https://secure.vulcanworks.net/store...cers-Adapters/
Just measure carefully.
The drive belts are very durable in normal use, but once the side of the belt starts to chafe, it can rapidly deteriorate. I would refrain from even rolling it around until you get the alignment right.
Replacing the stock Dyna rim with a stock rim from a Sportster, just cause it's a HD rim doesn't make it stock on a different model. Trial and error time.
Shim time. Not a big deal.
I would check alignment too.
BTW just out of curiosity did you check to see if the original tire and wheel were centered in the frame. Dyna's are notorious for being off center, even though they are aligned properly.
As mentioned there are numerous hub widths and offsets.
Good luck.
1. Can you sight down the inside of the pulley and see a clearance between the pulley and the side of the tire? If not, you can pull the wheel and see if the inner pulley lip is at least above the tire. If not, you need to space the pulley out from the wheel some. having the inner lip 1/8 inch above the edge of the tire is good.
2. Check to make sure that the wheel is not bent and runs true. Also make sure that the bead on the tire is seated properly.
3. On thing that is of concern is that the wheel appears to have the same bolts hole sizes on the sides.. All of the later, say 1990- up wheels should have 7/16 bolts on the pulley side and 3/8 bolts on the disk side.. I'd be worried about using the wheel if the bolts were are the same size. It's possible you might not have the correct rear wheel.
4. The wheel spacing may be off. Especially is you are using 2000-up wheels with the seal bearings. You need to check pulley alignment and wheel alignment in the frame.
Thanks for the info. I have verified the pulley is in need of a spacer. I have another pulley that sits out a bit further. Using the other one, it no longer touches but I only have a hair more than 1/16 clearance. What should be the minimum clearnace?

If you spin the wheel and the closest the belt gets to the tire is 1/16". I'd run it.. Belts track truer than chains so if you have any clearance you are typically OK.
