Default What the heck? Help, please?

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. Hope y'all can offer some help.

2010 Fat Bob with V&H Pro Pipe Chrome. Intake and V&H Fuel Pak. About 3000 miles on the pipe.

Out riding this morning and start to hear a rattle after about 20 miles. Pull over and see that the two nuts holding the exhaust pipe flange to the front cylinder head are no longer there. Flange and pipe just flapping in the wind.

How in the hell did that happen? Do I just need to get two new nuts (HA!) and tighten it up? Or is there some type of gasket that needs replacing?

Thanks for any advice!!

I would bet the gasket is still in there. Take a look and see. Should be visible.

Your story is like when the Chinamans horse dropped dead ,,,, he turned around and said , "It has'nt done that before" .....

It can happen , and does happen ,, just a maintenance thing .... Should check them every 2 or 3000 , as well as exhaust clamps ....

I would take exhaust system off completely and install back, as per manual.. The procedure is written down to avoid stress and tight points so exhaust system will be leak free....

Your header gaskets should be ok at your mileage ,, but check them over and replace if necessary ... Check exhaust header studs ,, they should be ok , (when you get your new nuts , make sure they screw on ok before you install header pipe, if not they can be replaced)....

I'd doubt the exhaust gasket was lost; you usually have to dig those things out once you've torqued the exhaust nuts

This is why I've always double nutted the exhaust studs; once the exhaust stud nuts are torqued I double nut with chrome acorn nuts. The exhaust nut can't come loose, the stud threading is protected, and it has a nice finished look to it...

I like that idea Tin. However for the LRS I gotta find some black oxide acorns...

Check those nuts every 3rd or 4th ride while your detailing the lower areas, it only takes a minute.

Replace the exhaust gaskets... they are a 'crush' gasket, and you'll play hell getting a good seal 2nd time around.

Same thing happened to me with my pro pipe. Front header lost both nuts. I just replaced them and check them periodically. Haven't had a problem since. Didn't replace the crush gasket and haven't had any problems. I've got a few extra nuts in case it should happen again. But after 10k miles none of them have come loose. Like mentioned before just add it to your periodic check list.
