As I said, didn't think much of the fxdxt bags until I started using them, nor was I wowed by the looks of the fairing(especially the windshield), but having bubble fairings on triumphs back in the 90's I knew how well it would work. Had tombstone shields in the past(still have 1actually), & thought the tossup between wind protection & buffeting was a toss up. What I didn't like was how when it would get fogged up incoming headlights made it turn opaque.
Keep in mind that before soa was on tv, small fairings weren't seen much on the east coast, save maybe for the occasional fxr and the even rarer Sportster. Hell most Harley riders wouldn't wave because they didn't know she was a Harley. The only riders I'd met who really liked the look were BMW riders who said if they knew Harley made a bike like that they would have gotten 1.
Basically what I did was pick the bike I was most likely to leave relatively stock for the longest amount of time. The 3 items from the fxdp on my get list are the high output alternator, air seat, & crashbar. But if I could have gotten a sweeter deal on the P I probably would have went that way.
