They're the best bang for ya buck in the range. Big Twin engine, neutral riding position, more torque and roomier than a Sportster on the open road, pretty good handling compared to a Softail, it's easy to make significant handling improvements if you want to too and finally, they make a pretty good touring bike without the weight and bulk of an FLH.
It's a blank canvas. They look great from the factory, but still plenty of room to do whatever your heart desires. Touring, drag bike, bobber, etc. the only limits are your imagination, and your finances.

I have my long haul commuting and touring duties covered with my beemer so my Dyna is predominantly short hops but that wouldn't stop me strapping a bag to my bars and road tripping.
I think many use the Dyna as a stepping stone from a sportster to a tourer so there is always a good used market too.
I walked in the HD dealer ship and told the salesman that I wanted to buy a Lowrider, he asked me why I wanted a lowrider.
I just told him that I wanted the Hotrod of Harleys, its quick, light and nimble, looks great and is a jack of all trades so to speak.
