Crank sensors will typically generate codes if the they are flaky.. If they flat out quit. they won't produce a code.. Easy way to tell of the cranks sensor is working it to listen to the fuel pump after cranking. It should stay on for a second or 2 after. If not the ECU is likely not seeing the crank signal.. ECU will enable the fuel pump any time it sees the crank spin.. You should hear the pump run on key to tell you that the HB switch is good and fuel pump electrics are working.
Add: The statement on fuel pressure is right on.. It needs checking and since that was the last place mess with, I'd suspect something wrong there.. Squirting fuel in the intake is an easy way to verify as stated..

I did a crank sensor and it didn't behave anything like what you've described. It also returned a code.
Isn't there a filter inside the tank? was thgat replaced with the tank? I've seen one go and what you're describing sounds similar.
Is your bike a canbus model? I would have thought any issue if electrical would spit out a fault code. Faulty filters on the otehr hand.....
crank sensors typically WILL set a dtc, and there are multiple dtc's they could set. For instance, erratic signal, reference voltage open/short to ground, no signal etc, however it is possible for them not to produce a dtc. The best thing to do is see if the injectors are firing first, if not, crank the bike while observing ckps voltage. If a scan tool/tuner is available, it would be easiest to observe ckps in the data stream. If not you will have to back probe the connector and test with a dmn (volt meter). There will be 3 wires: signal, reference voltage (should be 5 volts) and ground.
I had the same symptoms with my 08 ultra . ended up changing the entire fuel pump assembly in the tank problem 90% solved . the fuel hoses get very brittle and can spray fuel inside the tank . check it . from what you said it ran ok before painting tank , did you remove the fuel pump from the tank ? if so the hoses could leak !!
UPDATE: Last night when I got home I pulled plug out of rear cylinder and checked for fire. Had none. Put plug back in, pulled front plug to check for spark (rule out bad plug throwing me off). Bike cranked over several times with no spark, then suddenly it sparked and bike started. Put plug back in, bike started 4 times so I went and bought a coil. Got home, tried to start in hopes it wouldn't and the new coil would verify that was the problem if bike did start. Replaced coil and still did not start. So I did as someone suggested and removed the gas cap and listened for fuel being sprayed inside tank. Sure ****, heard a significant spraying. Removed console and top plate to locate source of spray. It seemed to be coming from the back of the filter housing, so I figured it was cracked. I took pump apart and pulled it from tank. There is a "pressure switch" on the back of the filter housing with a hole on opposite side of housing and that's where the spray was coming from. Since I had it apart, I tried blowing through filter. Sumbitch was clogged solid. During this time I had noticed quite a few large pieces of debris inside tank (paint). I finished pumping out the fuel (using hand pump), removed the large debris and at this point noticed a shitload of very tiny gold glittery like particles floating everywhere and running down inside of tank. It was the paint and metal flake from when the previous tank owner painted it and didn't mask **** off. In my excitement to get **** fixed it never even dawned on me the paint I saw through the center hole would ever be a problem. I know, f-n retard. Sometimes my body moves faster than my mind. Anyway, I have now fully cleaned the inside of the tank (the best anyone could hope for anyway). For ***** and giggles I blew out the filters (yes, I know ruined them, but they were getting replaced anyway) and reinstalled assembly, added a splash of fuel just to see if she'd fire. No dice. I figure at this point that paint residue has acted like a varnish and varnished up my injectors. I am going to pull them tonight, flush the lines, replace the filters and start all over with a clean tank, clean filters and clean fuel. Fingers crossed. and if this doesn't solve the problem, Im just gonna have to take it in to be worked on. WISH ME LUCK.
Good luck. You're not "f-n retard" it's easy to over look these things. The part that bothers me is that you said you didn't have spark, which will be a completely separate issue. Check your injectors like you said, but there's a good chance the filter stopped the flake before it reached the injectors. The screen on the pump will need to be replaced and possibly the pump as well. If you continue to lack spark, test power/ground to the coil, if none, were right back to the crank/cam sensor. One handles fuel, the other spark. Good luck.
