Me myself I tend to leave the lower rocker box chrome and blacken the uppers. On the twin cam it gives it a nice contrast since the rocker box orientation is flipped from one cylinder to the other. If you aren't going to do the entire motor fins and all then I say a good contrast is king, leave the tube chrome and when added in with the fins any black accents will pop more. But that's just my abstract opinion .
Not the best pic, but mine came factory with wrinkle black uppers and gloss black lowers. It bothered me enough that I ordered lowers to match in wrinkle black.
This is my Street Glide. The Dyna is the same, but the rocker box bottoms are polished not chrome and the fins are black. You can kinda see it in the sig pic.

Gorman, mine is similar to MattVA's motor, but taken a little deeper. The top r-covers are wrinkly, the lowers are glossy. I did leave a couple of shiny pieces in for contrast, but for the most part it's pretty dark, and prob not for everyone. Here's an enlargement of my sig pic to give you a better view:
I'm sure whichever way you go it will come out fine!

Nice timely thread for me... I have to do some top end R&R shortly, and was thinking about different finishes. My rear rocker is leaking a bit on the lower side, so I was going to pull them and see what's what. My engine is wrinkle black, but I was starting to wonder how it would look with gloss black rockers and side covers against the wrinkle cases and polished fin edges...
Funny you guys mention it, I am currently hunting good painted or polished covers for round 2. silver engine with polished covers and black cylinders with the silver heads.
