Default o7 belt whine?

i have an 07 FXD with 5600 miles...just did the 5000 mile check myself and retensioned the belt (it wasnt far off)...centered the axle, etc and i now notice a whine when i am slowing down with the clutch in and the engine noise low...i dont know if it was always there or if its new...i might be hearing things..it is not the brakes rubbing or the tranny(i dont think)...it is a slow whine and my friend thinks it may just be the tires but i tend to think its the belt. i was wondering if anyone else has noticed this? please let me know.

I had the rear wheel off my 06 FXDI to install a sprocket cover. Got everything back together and also had a whine. I was careful to count the turns of the axle adjusters and to put it back the same as it came off. I did some research and found several good write-ups in the Do-It-Yourself forum.

You may have too much tension on the belt, may out of alignment andriding incorrectly on the sprockets, may be dirty. These write-ups will give you several things to look for.

Hope thsi helps. Let us know what you find.

thanks for the reply....i am going to take your advice and get some krylon spray and put a bit on the belt to see if the noise changes...that way i will know for shure if its the belt. it doesnt actually squeak its more of a whir....i'll give it a try and get back..

I took my back tire off middle of last week and I was surprised at how much slack was in the belt...hopefully my new tire comes in today so I can get back on the road....

I have an 07 FXDC with the same noise. Took it to the dealer and he told me it was tensioning adjuster for the belt and there was nothing that could be done about it!!!!. I think I need to find another dealer.

there is no tensioning adjuster that could make that noise....he's nuts...there is a base growl that the belt makes but a whine is something else...i am trying to get a handle on belt tension. mine is right where it should be according to the service manual. i have been checking other 07's that i have access to and i find that the tension is all over the place...most is a bit looser than mine...however, i checked a new one on the floor of the dealer and it was as tight as a bango string. if their tool is accurate mine is right on the money...we'll see...sure dont want to screw the belt up as its a &$%&^ to change...on yours, my first stop would be to check the alignment and then the tension..if that doesnt work try the toothbrush and warm water. i do feel that this is something the owners need to get a handle on as i have talked to 3 machanics (2 at diff dealers and 1 in indy) and they all have different ways, and specs, that they use. my personal feeling is that you should error on the side of loose. if its too tight it could take the bearing out and that wouldnt be pretty...please let me know what you find..
