Default Question about Derby bolts

Sorry for duplicate posting (I also put this on tech forum, but think I'll probably get someone on here who is familiar with 06 dynas).

I had a problem this weekend (several actually) with my derby cover bolts.

Have an '06 lowrider.

Used a sears torque wrench - big mistake. Anyway, long story short....

I was using chrome bolts that were 1/8" short in length (due to out-of-stock at harley dealership). One bolt seemed to partially strip with the torque wrench. I removed it, and put back a slightly longer bolt - and it seems to be gripping ok.

However, if I have a problem - what I want to know is wheather there is enough material in the primary cover to put in a heli-coil where the derby cover mounts?

Appreciate any feedback on this. I believe the '06 primary cover is different, so hopefully someone has experience with that. Thanks in advance.

Can you post a picture of that area warren??

I don't remember how much meat is in that area.

If I was to guess, I would guess - yes.

like mudpuddle mentioned, without seeing it, guess would be that you can likely heli-coil it. it so, i would also recommend you get rid of the junk tork bolts, and get some chrome allen head ones. they make it easier, and less frustraing the next time you do a service. I get mine at Ace Hardware.

Do you have to helicoil it? Any chance you could chase the hole with a tap an possibly save what is there?

If you were able to put in a longer bolt and it gripped ok, I would not go to the trouble of a helicoil. Just ensure you get the longer bolt back in the same hole. I agree that you should chase the threads and you may be able to gain a bit more area for contact withthe bolt threads.

Which bolt is it? Not likely to leak any way as long as you got some grip in the bad bolt and the rest of them are ok,especially the upper half. It's just oil slinging around,no pressure.Replaced all my bolts with chrome and just snugged them up good with out a torque wrench,no problem.

Good Luck

Tom

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Unfortunately it is one of the lower bolts, but I had planned on trying a longer screwn (run a tap first) and hopefully it is ok. I just want to plan in case I do need a helicoil - I have a long trip starting on Friday.

Mud - I'll try to take some pix when I change the bolts out.

I already ordered allen head bolts (chrome) earlier today - so hopefully they will arrive tomorrow.

Thanks again... Warren

Good luck, I had a hell of a time with mine too. Overtorqued from the factory. Killed three Crapsman torx wrenches on it. Stripped four of the five bolts and had to drill out the heads.

To heli coil you will have to drill it out a couple sizes larger right? Why couldn't you tap it and go up to the next size bolt? I mean you will have to drill and tap it anyway for the helicoil to screw into the hole so why not just drill it and tap it with the next size? I guess I'm throwing out another possibility.

I get all my chrome nuts bolts etc. from Fastenal. There is a branch down the street from here. I have to order them but I generally do from the stealer as well. Just picked up a pack of 10 button head seat bolts for 18 bucks.

I'm not positive, but I believe the next size up from a 1/4" bolt is a 5/16" anyway - and I think that is the size you would drill for a 1/4" heli-coil - so no real gain there.

The other advantage (in my view) of using a heli-coil is that the derby cover itself does not need any holes widened (which might be the case with a 5/16") - and also that the bike still uses standard fasteners, so any future service work won't be complicated.

I understand where you are coming from though - and if I'm mistaken about the heli-coil hole size, then it may in fact be a good option to look at.
