Default When to change shocks

My 96 Convertible has 40K miles and its original shocks. No leaks, but am wondering if it's just time to replace them. Have been riding twoup the last several years, and have taken a number of 3-5 day trips with full TBag and saddlebags.
Would appreciate any thoughts/advice

With 40 K you might want to replace them with a better set like the progressive shocks for your application. They no doubt have seen some wear riding 2 up with extras.I think you'll see an improvement in the ride also.

Thanks for the reply and reco. I do have a set of the Progressive shocks which I used for awhile, but my wife could never get used to the firmer ride. Also, the Progressives are almost a 1/2" shorter (12.6") than OEM (13"). Progressive doesn't make an OEM replacement for the Convertible. BTW they're for sale.
The service manual is silent about changing out unless the bushings are worn, or there is leakage or damage.
