I just took delivery of a 2012 Street Glide, this is my 5th HD; for the life of me, I can't find neutral on this one! Engine running, engine off; doesn't matter... Anybody got a suggestion? Was told by one to change transmission fluid? Really?
Over the many years (75) of my life I've fooled around with lots of lubricants as have many other old geezers. When it comes to
HD trannys gear oil works far superior. I've tried lots, both heavy and lightweight, from Valvoline conventional to Redline V-twin
Shockproof. To narrow it down depending on your druthers I'd go with Mobil 1 synthetic 75w140 or Valvoline conventional 85w140.
I would also suggest checking your clutch plate adjustment and use the same oil to lube your clutch cable - lasts damn near forever.
Before removing the derby cover place the bikes jiffy stand on a piece of 2x4 to minimize the loss of oil. And adjust on an overnight cold bike. While you are in there the oil level should be between the bottom of the clutch and to the clutch spring, too much could give you the neutral problem.
I just did my clutch adjustment a few days ago. The biggest problem for me was getting that nut loose. It took a while and a little temper flare but once it came loose all was simple from then on. Good luck.
That's why I went and bought a cheap set of offset wrenches.
On my RK I used to click into neutral as I was coming to a stop. If you do it enough times it becomes second nature. I tried all the tricks like everyone is saying but it was useless. That's one thing I noticed on my 16', doesn't matter when I do it moving or still, neutral is super easy to find. Glad they worked that out on the newer models, that used to **** me off.
I have found the shifter linkage can play a major role in that as well. I went from mids to forwards and to extended forwards and each set had different shift throws.
