Default Strapping to rear subframe and indicators

Hi all

I have a question. Apologies if it has been asked before, I have searched but couldn't find an answer.

I have a motorbike trip coming up and I would really like to take my Harley (2002 Dyna Superglide). My problem is I don't have any luggage (saddle bags) or a sissy bar. I have managed to load my gear by strapping it using the read indicators, seat and rear subframe between the suspension first bolt on the fender. I have managed to get everything loaded and snug, took it out for a spin and it held well.

My question is do you think this could damage the bike?

Sorry for the long post I can be abit of a rambler!

Edit - I am camping on this trip so have a fair amount of gear although I do pack light. Trip will be just over 1000 miles long on various speed roads with the longest day around 250 miles

I wouldn't trust turn signals to handle a load for very long. They weren't designed to carry stress.

T-Bags should have something to stow your gear.

So long as you don't use brute force on those straps on the turn signals, you will be fine. I've used the rear turn signals as a mounting point for luggage on my other Harley for years and years (with similar rear-signal design) and never had even one concern.

In your case though you should seriously consider getting a sissy bar (even if it's just a low one). You'd be amazed with the tons of stuff you can strap to it, and how many easy ways you can do it. It would really make your life a lot easier and more worry-free.

No, I don't think you'll cause any structural damage,, it's likely you'll get some scuff marks.
Most straps or bungee's today have rubber coated hooks,, but that rubber can wear through pretty fast if it's a tight and/or prolonged contact along with all the vibrations.
Just keep an eye on those hooks and hook locations,, perhaps carry a roll of electricians vinyl tape in case you have to add a little protection.
Bring some large plastic garbage bags to stuff things into when it rains.
Another handy place to strap things is to the front of the handlebars,,

Thank you all for the advice.

A sissy bar is on my planned list of things to buy but being in the UK I have found it a bit of a pain getting the bracket for what I consider a reasonable price. This I might have a crack at making one myself.

They've got a 1/4 inch bolt inside them, they're as strong as all hell. l have a spare set dome nuts for the top shock mounts l've welded a chain link to for front tie down points and just loop occy straps around the indicators and back over whatever l'm carrying.
