Hey y'all,
I have a super glide custom that has a stock air filter and Python slip on pipes. Currently getting a lot of popping on decel which I know is related to not having a tuner and a good filter. I plan on grabbing the FP3 soon but would like to hear some suggestions on what's a good air cleaner that won't break the bank. What are your guys thoughts?
The majority of A/C's available out there will feed your engine more air than it can actually use until you've done some heavier engine/head/cam mods. Find an A/C already set up to vent crankcase gasses externally. Most A/C's are EPA compliant and vent the oxygen depleted, oily, hot gasses back in to the A/C which does your throttle body/intake no favors; it also increases intake temperatures. Many of the EPA compliant A/C's can be modified to vent to atmosphere if you do decide on a compliant model.
Decel popping and burbling is caused by the reversion of fresh air entering the the exhaust system and mixing with the unburnt fuel coming out of the engine under off-throttle situations. When the air-fuel ratio is right it burns off in the hot exhaust. The idea is to not let the air-fuel ratio to hit the burn point; that's accomplished through tuning and working toward reducing the reversion of fresh air in to the exhaust...
The stock air filter. Nah I'm just ****in with you. Actually tin cup's post is dead on accurate. I have the heavy breather that came stock on my lrs. I hate it but don't want to switch to one that will be less effective for performance. I really like the look of the screamin eagle ventilator myself. But like tin cup said, you're definitely gonna want to vent the crankcase gasses to atmosphere. I'd suggest a Powervision tuner cause it's only a couple hundred dollars more, but you can do any modifications you want without having to buy a new tuner. And if you want to have it dyno tuned, you already have it. If you go with pv, you definitely want to get it through fuel moto because they have a lot of tunes available for pretty much everything. I made the mistake of going through the HD dealer, and can't find a good tune for my setup.
