Default 1000 mile service

Doing my 1000 mile service this weekend. What oil do you guys recommend. I know that I am going synthetic, but which brand. I hear a lot around here about Amsoil. Were is a good place to pick up the oil rather than the H-D dealership.

Also, is the H-D oil filter wrench necessary? My service manual says to use it, but not to reinstall the new oil filter with the wrench, rather hand-tighten it.

Lastly, any TX folk around here? Which viscosity oil do you recommend to get though this soon to be unbearable summer?

Thanks guys,

L0W R1D3R

Austin, Texas in the house. I did my 1000-mile service a week ago and I used Mobil 1 synth in all three holes. It was a bit$$ getting the oil filter off by hand. I ended up taking a small piece of sand paper and wrapping it around the filter to get a grip on it. I believe that the seal on that filter expands when heated, so that was most likely the reason for it being so tight. I hand tightened the new filter and have had no leaks and the bike has been running great.

Thanks for the reply. What viscosity Mobil 1 did you use? I ask because it is HOT here in TX.

Lowrider,
Mobil One 20W/50 V-Twin is what I use. But only in the crankcase. I put Lucas 85W/140 in the gear box and Formula + in the primary chaincase. Some guys on this forum use Mobil One 15W/50 auto oil in the crankcase (only) because it has moly. They use it because it is cheaper than the V-Twin oil which are both synthetic. I may switch to it in the future. But don't use it in your primary as the moly may affectthe operation of your clutch.
The heavier gear oil (85W/140) helped to quiet down my six speed gear box a lot. Now I'll use nothing less in it. Just my $.02.
Have fun doing your 1000 mile service. BTW--that fiter wrench comes in handy. If you intend to do all your servicing yourself it may be worth the cost to avoid any headaches when removing the old filter.

Thanks for all of the input. Don't you think that SAE50 may be a better viscosity here in Texas as I will surely be changing the oil again before winter? Service man. states that SAE20W50 for temps no lower than 40F and SAE50 for temps no lower than 60F. Hell, here in TX I may be able to get away with SAE60 (temps no lower than 80F). I just want to be careful as this is my first motorcycle. And I will be damned if the dealer is touching my bike for a simple service.

hey low r1d3r, go with the mobil 1 v-twin in the engine, had my 02 apart at 21,000 mile for the old style cam chain tensioner replacement and lifter replacement to the "B' lifter and the old parts looked good and clean. myself i also use mobil 1 syn gear lube in the tranny and syn 3 in the pri.( I know it's semi -syn). i've also added an oil cooler from jagg w/the thermostat in the oil filter adapter. i think you are about to see how hot that new motor will run. i have an 05 fxdli. ran with out the cooler and have never seen the mobil-1 smoke like it did coming out of the dipstick hole. enjoy your new ride.

After my first service, I went with the 20w-50 Amsoil in the engine and primary, Redline HD Shockproof in the transmission. That's a bout 11,000 miles ago and I've had no problems. As far as which oil vs. synthetic, I think the point of changing your fluids at regular intervals is probably as important or more important that what you actually use.

After all, Harleys were running in TX and 100+ temps long before synthetics came around.
