I also prefer the 60-65 range. 70 on the interstate is ok, but the problem then is getting run over by the semis![:@]
I don't like to run much faster, as it takes away my ability to gaze at the countryside too!
Seems Michelle is always saying 'did you see that?' and I always miss it!
This is a really interesting question.
I've read thru most of the replies, and it seems that many who replied have a 6-speed (06+) machine.
For me the answer is fairly complicated due to the inherent "dyna vibration". I have a 5-speed.
Of course they all vibrate at low RPM, but then smooth out. In my case, and probably for many others, I hit another vibration resonance before it smooths out for good.
This second resonance is not very significant, but happens at about 45mph in 3rd, 55mph in 4th, etc, and lasts for a 3-5 mph ticks - I like to stay away from those vibration points.
So - that being said, I can cruise quite comfortably in 3rd gear at 40mph, if I can get up to 50, I'll probably keep it in 3rd, just wind it out a little more becasue I'm past that vibe point. This is a really nice spot on the 5-speed tranny, 3rd gear at 50mph, easy to twist it and accelerate, easy to slow down too. If I'm forced to settle in at 45mph, then I shift up to 4th as the vibe is much less significant in 4th at this speed.
You should have turned this into a poll question. I like 55-60. I do not know why but I am in my special place cruising down the road at that speed.

I know...weird question. I just got in from cruising some quiet country roads at dusk here in Wisconsin. Seems like when I have the roads to myself, enjoying the scenery, enjoying the sound of the engine... and look down at my speedometer, I'm almost always going exactly 40mph. Yep, I'm no speed freak. Just wondering, do you find yourself cruising at a certain speed when there's no traffic, and you're just enjoying the ride?
You took the words right out of my mouth. 1900-2000 rpms (40-45 mph) working under a slight load in 5th gear on a country road at dusk. It flat doesn't get any better than that.
