Left work on sat. and picked up the shocks on my lunch break. Got them installed this morning, Going for a ride beforeI go to work. Thanks for all the replies.
I found a jack at one of the local auto parts stores for $49. It works great, I use it all the time. Makes wheel cleaning a lot easier and will make changing the shocks a pretty easy job. I put progressive 418 11.5" on the rear of my lowrider, the ride and handling have improved a lot.
MV I had a friend make me one of the set-ups that you were talking about. I have a jack also, but I very seldom use the jack. I use the 'lifter' all the time. I changed my rear shocks also this weekend. Got a new sundowner seat. It is thicker than the stock, so I felt a bit uncomfortable when I sat on the bike and didn't have my feet firmly planted, so I ended up lowering her. Pretty easy job. I got some from 'EMS" shocks.....$600 bucks. Adj preload and tension. I know I'm supposed to get shorter front springs now, but I went ahead and raised my forks 1/2 inch in their housings. I may have to get another kickstand, because when you lower a bike, you don't get the same lean angle. Probably a few guys on this thread will find that out. Ifanyone wants me to post a pic of the lifter, I can probably do that later when I get home from work
I think it has a lot to do with how much you weigh. I only weigh 160lbs and the stock Harley shocks were oversprung and underdamped for me. Every time I hit a bump it was like riding a pogo stick. If I hit a bump in a turn the rear end wanted to jumpsideways a little. After I put the progressive 418s on the ride is softer and smoother and the handling is much better.
I put the 412's on 06 fxdi in about 15 mins. no jack required 1 at a time. by the way stock shocks are way smoother.
Gotta diagree with you there, I have the 412's on my 06. I think they are great.
Have your tried a few different adjustments on the shock settings?
No adjustment in the world will help the ride after you lower it.
If you go low expect a terrible back breaking ride.
Once again thats your opinion and you are entitled to it, as for me the ride is fine.
Honest from what I have read there have been very few complaints aobut the ride after lowering, and Btw this comes from a guy that rides an Ultra Classic as well.
A simpe way to do it is to use a car sisciors jack and put it under the frame close to the tire. Leave it on the kick stand and you can get enough lift to pick upthe back tire and the bike is sitting on the jack, kick stand and front tire. It should not fall off that. Then go to work.
I just added 412's today. Will try them out tomorrow.
