Default Slider no slide

Got into a my first low-speed, high side wreck this morning right after I hit 10k on the bike.

I was at a stop in a residential neighborhood. Made a left turn and at 5-10 mph hit a patch of gravel. The *** end slid out and as I was trying to let off the gas and grab front brake, the bike leaned to the right and laid down. I was still moving, so this allowed the Bunk King crash bar slider to almost disintegrate. The bolt holding in the slider grabbed the asphalt and stopped the bike like RIGHT NOW while my body was still moving at 5-10 mph. I got launched over the handlebars, tucked and rolled landing on my shoulder.
Now, neither I or the bike are damaged beyond repair but we both have a little road rash to deal with. I was wearing a helmet so my grape is okay. The helmet touched the ground as I was rolling, but I had my chin tucked and I can barely see a mark on the helmet.

So....the BK bar didn't slide like I thought a slider should. But, the bar DID keep the tank & engine from being smashed even though the bike ended up laying completely on the throttle side. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the Kruesi OG K Bar instead. Wish I could swap now, but I ain't made of money.

Glad it wasn't worse, for you or the bike.

I've always had mixed feelings about sliders... I know people with sportbikes who have sliders on every possible surface, and sometimes I've seen the slider actually punch back through whatever it was mounted to (like an engine case), in a situation where there may have only been cosmetic damage without the slider. On my Speed Triple I had considered a slider for the alternator cover (basically where our derby covers are), as its what would hit the ground on the left side. By chance, I dropped the bike once in by driveway moving it around, and that's exactly where it landed. I replaced the cover with an OEM replacement, and found that the new cover was about half the price of the slider I had been considering... I'm sure there are accidents where sliders have saved money, but it seems pretty hit and miss to me overall...

You tried to grab the front brake or you did grab the front brake? That'll lay the bike flat at those speeds. The rear brake is what you use for slow speeds.

I've seen a couple dudes bust their rear shocks on their Harleys by laying the bike down with sliders on the rear shock upper mount. Turned what would have been scraped metal into a broken shock. You can also risk frame damage from crash bars but if it's bad enough to bend the frame it's probably totaled anyway.

I’m sure that even a slow spill still hurts physically and mentally.
It could have been worse though and once you get that Low Rider S repaired it’ll only be a dent in your pride and a memory to tell friends about in the future.

Glad your Ok.
So you layed the bike on it's side,, you and the bike are whole all but for some road rash,,
,,but some how, the BK crash bar thing failed?

Did/do you expect to have your bike come out completely clean from a slide by simply using the "correct" crash bar?
Do you think a "slide" on the tar with a bike being horizontal with no rider instead of vertical with a rider should or can be fully protected by an add-on device to make it "slide" instead of receiving minimal damage from the road?

You and the bike walk away with a tweeked air cleaner,, and you gotta dog BK?

Damn that sucks man! Could have been a lot worse.

I’ve got a takeoff fairing, shocks and shock mount covers and will have my stock S air cleaner off my bike this week. If you want them, shoot me a somewhat reasonable offer and they are yours. I’m in St. Louis, so it’ll ship from here. No damage to any of it.

On the other hand, now would be a perfect time to upgrade to something else if you wanted to😎

I tried. The slide and get off happened too quickly for me to grab it while I was trying to steer into it.

No, the crash bar portion did it's job - protecting the gas tank and engine from damage. The issue I have is a company touting this: "The bar features replaceable delrin sliders on the ends to help the bike slide over the pavement as opposed to taking hold of the bike while it is sliding and causing it to highside." I take the word "pavement" to mean a standard asphalt roadway. You can see my slider just about disintegrated allowing the bolt to jam itself into the blacktop. Again, at about 5-10 mph, if it would have slid the bike might not have come to rest flat on its side.

That's the reason why I purchased the BK bar instead of something like a moustache bar or standard crash bar configuration.

I may hit you up on that. I took the busted fairing off this morning and I kinda like the different look, but I haven't ridden it sans fairing, yet. I'll get back with you later on if I wanna replace some stuff.

Always considered sliders good for no speed tipovers, personally. Ive never had confidence theyd do anything with speed. Thats just me.

Glad you're okay and the bikes not too bad... ... though calling a straight bar sticking out from the side of the bike a slider, is like skating on an ice pick... that thing don't slide.
Brute-force devices will not help... you want your 'crash' bars to absorb some of the energy.. get mangled and then get replaced... without trashing your frame or other pricey bits.
