Default Straight Dangerous, Dyna drag bike build thread

Hi Guys, been a while since I've posted but thought I would start a thread detailing my newest project I'm calling "Straight Dangerous" a Dyna drag bike built for the streets. I figure it is far enough along to start the thread and I will update as things get done.

( PLEASE keep in mind that this is a purpose built street drag bike, all design decisions are made with one goal in mind, going really fast 1/4 mile at a time.)

A little back story, I was in the middle of building a fxr drag bike when I happened on a 03' dyna with a 124 in it for a killer deal, The 124 was built by a good buddy and features S&S cases , zippers cylinders, 13:1 compression, huge 700 something lift cams and std heads ported by Dave Mackie, with a S&S super D carb the bike made 158hp, it was then detuned a bit for the street, a super G replaced the D and it was brought down to 135hp. Overall the Dyna has a lot of nice parts on it and was much further along than the fxr. The only problem was it still had the stock length swingarm and a tiny 130 harley dunlop rear tire on it so when you hit the throttle you weren't going anywhere, it would spin the tire in all 5 gears if you opened it up.

So with the Dyna ready to run I decided to concentrate on getting the power to the ground and seeing if we can get this beast to hook up like a proper drag bike.

here are a couple of pics as I got her

First thing we did was take the front end off and replace it with an inverted front end from a 09' yamaha R1. I had a machine shop make a custom set of triple trees to mount up the front end and will be running the R1 wheels, brakes, controls etc.

I chose the R1 wheels specifically because of their light weight, easy availability and their awesome braking power ( if you go fast you gotta be able to stop fast)

Straight Dangerous, Dyna drag bike build thread-gvr0ssj.jpg

up next we got a Brocks performance aluminum swingarm, this beast is 8-11" over stock and accommodates the 200 rear tire and R1 wheel with the 28mm axel.

a little more about the wheels, After meeting and having a nice conversation with Brock Davidson from Brocks performance, where he was telling me a neat little fact, for every pound of rotating weight you take off the wheels it equals 7 pounds of static weight loss on the bike. So going from a stock dyna rear wheel which weighs in at 51lbs complete with tire, rotors, axel etc to a R1 wheel which weighs in at 35lbs complete their is a 16lbs difference, the equivalent of stripping 112lbs off the bike! The aluminum swingarm, even at 11 over stock weighs 6lbs less than the stock length dyna swingarm!

Now the dyna is starting to look like a drag bike!

So now, in the middle of this project the cam bearings on my road king decided to take a dump and take the whole bottom end of the motor with them...so what would be the smart reasonable thing to do here... you guessed it, get a S&S 124 kit for the road king, add a chain conversion and send the swingarm off to RB racing for their swingarm conversion. the poor road king looks like a skeleton of its former self...

So here we are, currently the road king is waiting on parts from S&S that are back ordered, the swingarm will be sent out tomorrow to RB racing, waiting on a manifold and injectors from HPI....waiting waiting waiting.

The dyna is currently at my good friends shop Royal T Racing where it is getting a custom gas tank and tail section built for it. Pat and Luke formally worked for Jesse James at west coast choppers and their fab skills are unbelievable. here is a pic of their turbo dyna they are building, my tail section will be similar to this one.

The road king rebuild is draining a lot of the money from this project so we have had to slow down a bit on the drag bike build. I am still hoping to have both bikes up and running and testing for the end of February for a Harley vs import race down here in louisiana.

Up next for the dyna we will be adding a bdl belt drive open primary, custom set of mid controls, air shifter, ohlins shocks, ceramic wheel bearings and trying to get it on the road. Once it is rolling we will start to try and get more horse power out of the motor.

I will update this thread as progress is made, thanks for looking.

I would really like to Thank Chris and Matt form Hardtail Harry's motorcycle shop down here in New Orleans, these guys are doing a killer job helping me with both projects, great guys to do business with!

Thanks!

Well as the motor sits I think we can get into the high 10's, the ultimate goal is to be in the 9's.

We'll see how that plan unfolds!

The next phase of my build will be an aluminum swingarm. Looking into manufacturers now. Can that swingarm handle the torque? Seems like it would want to twist without a triangulated truss or taller box sections.

I assume there are some beefy engine stabilizers planned. The stock setup is wholly inadequate for this kind of bike.

Anxious to see where this goes. Very cool.

The swingarm is pretty beefy, I couldn't imagine the torque needed to twist something like that, Brock insisted it would be able to handle anything I throw at it, only one way to find out I guess.

I will be replacing the mounts to the ones made by Chopper Haus. they are really nice pieces and are supposed to keep everything aligned and securely mounted. They are definitely designed to take some serious abuse!

Does anyone know if Howard at Motorcycle Metal still offers a forum discount? With both these builds going on at once I could use any discount I can get!
