Default riding in salt

I know this isn't really the right thing to do, but it's going to be 48-50 tomorrow and it hasn't been above 28 in seems like 2 months. It snowed like crazy the past month, then it rained and washed away all the snow and salt. But of course last week it snowed again and as usual they dumped the dead sea all over the roads, and it hasn't rained since. This weekend its going to be near 50 and I'm dying to get out there - I'm going nuts not riding. So I'll bring my 5 gallon 12v water sprayer to my underground parking lot (the joys of "city" living) and rinse off the bike when I get back. I know it's not ideal, but why deny myself the possibly 50 deg ride when I may not see that temp again for another month. Maybe I'll just ride the Road Glide so I won't hurt the Special...

I figure 5 gallons of cold water on the bike should rinse it off enough, right?

You'll get salt in places you wouldn't imagine, I fight the urge whenever it's nice outside. Sand and salt are mortal enemies to alloy metals. Besides the cagers haven't seen bikes on the road, so now they won't be looking at all. I don't even lift the covers to look at mine during the winter months.

Salt Away, in a lawn/garden sprayer; just remember, a motorcycle has lots of little nooks and hidie holes Me, the bike stays in the garage until the rains of spring return and wash that crap away...

You'll get the surface salt, but it's the brine mix that gets in the cracks that will screw you. There will be puddles and wet roads from melted off snow and ice on the sides of the road. But it's your bike, I know how you feel. But I can't afford a replacement let alone have 2 bikes. So have a blast.

riding in salt

Ride it - why you bought the damn thing..., then drink a beer or two..., hose it down - call it good

Mostly..., just enjoy the day

Gotta love the comments from those who live in areas where salt is only a condiment.

I know, it’s a tough call. I honestly will sit around and be miserable if it’s 50 and I don’t ride. I figure the Low Rider is with me for life, while the Road Glide may eventually get traded in for some new 147ci M16 (see what I did there?) bagger in a few years, so it’ll be the sacrificial lamb if I ride either of them.

I’ve actually read that cold water is better to rinse off salt then hot. Something about the hot dissolving the salt vs rinsing it away.

Yep. It’s going to be nice here tomorrow but the roads are white with salt. I ran the cage through the car wash this morning and it was nasty again by this afternoon. If I thought there was any way I could wash all that **** off my bike I would ride tomorrow but (sigh) it’s staying in the garage. I HATE OHIO WINTERS!!! As soon as I’m able I’m heading south.
