Bought a used 2013 Fat Bob. The manual says for the transmission use Formula + Trans/Chain oil or Screaming Eagle Synth Oil which I assume is the same as the 20-50 oil for the engine. And for the primary it says only use Formula+ Trans/Chain oil.
My questions are: 1 Do they mean I can use the exact same oil in the trans as the engine? ( All my KTM bikes do)
2 What weight Trans/Chain oil can I use in the primary as the manual says it’s the only option
And nowhere does it give the weight of this Harley oil.

Don't use the Formula + in the engine. The Syn 3 can be used in all three holes, engine, trans and primary. Formula + can be used in the trans. and designed for the primary. I use M1 syn. 20w50 in the engine and Pri. and M1 Syn. gear lube in the trans., I think it's 75W90. Been using this for years in all three bikes with no problems. The 20W50 is a bit thick on a cold clutch so try a 10w40 oil for a while, see how you like it.
Harley is back to first choice Formual + for primary and transmission. It is a straight non detergent 50W gear oil. You do not want high detergent engine oil in primary or transmission since there is no filter.
Synthetic 20W50 in engine. 15W-50 has worked fine for me for 50K and as far North as your are would be a good choice.
I had no questions or concerns on the engine itself. I’m running Royal Purple 20-50 Synth. But if y’all recommend the Harley Formula+ for the primary, then I’ll use that as well in the transmission. After a beer or 3 it dawned on me that my other bikes had a shared sump so the oil going to the clutch was getting cleaned by the oil filter but Harley they are separated so not using a high detergent oil in a non filtered system makes sense.

By ALL Means Run The ROYAL PURPLE In The Primary in 20 w - 50 WEIGHT and Spectro ( NOW S&S BRAND) in the Transmission .23 Ounces of SPECTRO /S&S in a dry and flushed H-D Transmission .Or if you cannot buy immediately from Advanced Auto Parts the SPECTRO /S&S Brand 75 Weight......then LUCAS NHRA Approved 75-90 in your H-D tranny will work Wonderfully .

Sorry but you are not going to get away that easy for starting an oil thread. The tin men have not been here with their tin ware yet or the EP differential oil guys....

Ha! It’s not really an oil thread. More of clarifying what’s in the Harley owners manual. Manual gives lots of weight use options for the engine oil but nowhere do they say what the Formula+ oil actually is should one want to use a different product but still have the same specs. Those oil threads are slippery!

Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 in the engine, Mobil 1 10W-40 Motorcycle in the primary, and Mobil 1 75W-90 gear lube in the transmission. I am a Mobil 1 guy, and it's what I use, just another option.
Mobil 1 is a good oil. I’ve used it in lots of motors. The issue we have in Canada is getting V Twin specific oil. I did a forum search and a guy in Calgary, not far from me looked high and low for VTwin oil. No luck. A few other Canadians piped in saying the same thing. I have 20-50w synth in the engine but it’s not a v twin specific oil. Jesus, maybe this is an oil thread!
