Having a little clean of the Fat Bob today and found the secondary drive belt has split down the middle laterally (photo).
Quite disturbing as I gather the lifespan of these should be many years and miles. My 2010 model has managed just over 5000 miles. Any ideas how this might have happened.
Probably not. I have the standard belt guard but I assume you mean something else. The gravel suggestion is a very sensible scenario, thanks. Question now is how long dare I go on before I get a mortgage to cover the repair bill?
There should be two belt guards. One on top amd one on bottom. Basically the entire free span of the belt is covered.
Any responsible tech is gonna tell you to park the bike until it's repaired. I know I wouldn't be going very far or very fast on it.
The replacement cost & complexity is probably the single biggest downfall of the otherwise robust belt system. My sympathies. It's not a real difficult job but it does take some special tools and a gasket kit.
Zippers Performance makes a GREAT 530 O-Ring Chain and Sprockets to retro - fit that cheap *** junk rear belt drive to your rear wheel and in a complete kit with spacers, sprockets and everything needed . BELTS from H-D are GARBAGE.....as evidenced from your pictures .CALL and BUY a ZIPPERS PERFORMANCE Front & Rear Sprocket,Spacers, Chain and accessories & have NO MORE WORRIES .
I've seen many stone/rock damaged belts, but I've never seen a lateral split as severe as yours. It appears to be similar to dry rot. Perhaps the previous owner exposed it to something to accelerate this natural process. In any event you're due for a new secondary drive of your choice.
Staycations (holiday at home) are becoming quite popular stateside, if that helps to ease the pain.
