Default Plugfones

Has anyone tried these cross over ear plugs/headphones? They seem to be exactly what I am looking for and the price is right. I am guessing the sound quality wont be great. But i am more concerned with how well they block out wind and bike noise.

Here's what I use on longer trips for the last three riding seasons:
  • Sennheiser CX300 II in ear plugs connected by wire to the Scala Rider Q3 which is clamped to the left side of my 3/4 helmet
  • The Q3 has a build in radio and is bluetooth connected to my Garmin 590 for trafic info and MP3 player

I remember a few years ago one of the harley mags tested some fancy ear plug / ear bud things.
The company sent you some goop to put in your ear which made a mold. You sent this off to them & they sent it a silicone version back with an ear bud in it.

clever **** but not cheap.

can't think of the name now...

Yeah, Ultimate Ears is nice stuff.

The PlugFones design concerns me a bit. Since the cable exits straight out, there's no significant strain relief, and the cable is thin, I would expect them to be a pain to keep in place while pulling on your helmet and they will probably break within a year.

If you use a half helmet, the cables may vibrate in the wind and transfer noise into you ear canal.

The cheapest ones are probably worth a test, tho.

I can recommend Etymotic HF5 earphones. Sound and isolation are excellent.

I wear earbuds all the time. Most of the time I'm listening to music, sometimes I just ride with them in but not playing anything.
I used to run the Sennheiser/Creative buds like the ones above (watch out for knock-offs) connected to a cheap bluetooth adapter... However, I got a pair of SkullCandy Method bluetooth buds and they fit and sound great and allow easier changing of song, pause, volume control, etc even with gloves. As others mention fit is the most important factor and they need to be able to go under the helmet without getting torn out. I do not have to run them at high volume to drown out the outside noise because they fit well.

My buddy made this clip on how to make your own custom fit earbuds. (I haven't bothered to do this yet because the Methods work well for me, but i might try it. Also, before anyone gets PC, yes, I think he's misusing "noise-cancelling", which technically would mean the noise is being removed, not just blocked out)

Bo$e makes noise canceling earbuds. Quiet Comfort 20 I think. Absolutely amazing on planes, pretty damn good on the bike. They have a setting which activates a microphone which lets you hear background noise while still providing noise cancellation. Like when ordering a drink from the flight attendant and not having to take them off. They also have sealing buds which help as well.

Work really well. Expensive, but worth it.

+1 on the Sennheiser CX-300II ear-plug style. Not 'noise-cancelling' electronics, but their earplug design effectively blocks much of the noise, and can therefore be played at reasonable volume.

They are reasonably priced (about $50), good quality sound, and come with several pairs of different-sized silicone rubber plugs (as distinct from 'buds') that completely seal your ears.

A big plus is they are small, with a rounded profile, so they don't get pulled out when you pull on your helmet, and the helmet doesn't shove the uncomfortably against your head while wearing them.

Be careful to get originals. Many/most on eBay are knock-offs.
