Also figure every dime your spending is a sunk lost cost - will you have have the bike long enough to to merit the smile per mile ratio?

Yes, the modifications you make are for YOU. No one else.
As far as "value down the line" goes, an unmolested bike is worth more than a modded bike.

This is why I bought my Dyna new, and it took a while to find my electraglide.

Most used dynas I saw had a bunch of mods that I'd have to un-do, usually at my expense because the stock parts were gone. Namely exhaust, although take-off mufflers are usually pretty cheap. At the same time the prices were inflated because sellers were factoring in the cost of their modifications in the sale price. After looking for a bit I decided to just buy a new bike.

Want to have a unique bike? Leave it stock. You'll probably be the only one there without loud *** exhaust, not to mention everything else.

There is a line where modified becomes an asset worth more at sale. Not sure where that line is and it requires the right buyer, but it exists.

There are a few of us here with Dynas well beyond the point of no return...and I bet all their owners have near-zero intentions of selling.

I’m in the same boat, I tend not to sell so anything done is for me. Why else would you buy a Harley if not for customizing and making it for you.

if I wanted my bike to look like everyone else’s I would have bought a Honda

I have an '08 SuperG with 90,000 miles on it that I've had since new. Still love this bike. At 1,000 miles, had the 103 with Stage 2 installed. Over time, added Progressive front fork tube kit, Ohlins rear shocks, Mustang solo seat, forward controls, flush gas cap, speedo/tach combo, luggage rack, laid-back license plate holder, led tail/brake light, chrome battery cover, heavy-duty starter with chrome cover, windshield, Vance & Hines Big Shots. At around 75,000 miles, started getting some bottom-end noise. Replaced that engine with a CVO 110 with Stage 2. It isn't a rocket, but at only 650 lbs, does respectably well. A side note...after reading some negative comments regarding the quality of HD-branded engine oil, did some of my own on-line research. I am now suspicious that I might have avoided the bottom-end issues had I used a better oil. I recently added the Love Jugs cooling fans, also.

Truth Some of us are so far out in the tall grass with our rides, the mods we've done far exceed the value of the bikes; I have zero intention of selling, the bike is just a money magnet now collecting mods. I just document the changes with images and receipts and upping my accessory coverage; just in case...

Ha! My son, on a typical 16 year old's budget, wanted something unique on his ride so he epoxied some 45acp cases on his valve stem caps. Gotta start somewhere, right?
