Ha! My son, on a typical 16 year old's budget, wanted something unique on his ride so he epoxied some 45acp cases on his valve stem caps. Gotta start somewhere, right?
Those Skull stem caps always bring a Smile to my face...
A friend of mine who liked and wanted some skull stuff made the Caps his first budget purchase...The internal O-ring got kicked sideways while installing and slowly deflated his tire...good thing he talked so much that he was still at the Dealership (where they helped him) when it completely deflated.
I'll be telling that story until I die or get Dementia
Oh and yeah..."Smiles for Miles" or "Miles of Smiles"...oh Hell, whatever it was

You never get your money back out of your mods. Accept that & the Super Glide is the perfect blank slate. Pick yer poison- bobber or chopper, street fighter or "club", anywhere in between, or even FL it. I love my Super Glide & knew before I'd even ridden it all the way home that she was "the one". If you feel the same about yours, do what you gotta do to make it yours & enjoy the hell out of it.
I don't get the obsession with resale. If you need to worry about selling a bike why buy a motorcycle you didn't really want in the first place? If you need the money from resale enough to care it's silly to own a Harley. It's not a poor man's hobby. You don't need to be rich to have disposable income, but if you are poor there are plenty of less expensive machines of equal or better quality out of the box.
Easy way to determine if mods are cost-effective for you is make a spreadsheet listing everything you want to change and what it will cost to do each mod. Numbers don't lie if you get accurate pricing and that's almost effortless with the internet. If you want a particular "look" based on a specific frame design, get something with that frame in the first place.
If you keep your HD for life then the payback period is long enough for any mod.

Life changes...babies come, jobs go, divorces happen etc..
I don't think any of us ever buy with the intention to sell...
Bikes, especially H-Ds are considered luxury items where I live.
As such, they're the 1st things that go when those life changes kick in..
